Colloquium “What defence for tomorrow’s Europe?”

In his Sorbonne speech of 26 September 2017, Emmanuel Macron expressed the need to build a more sovereign Europe. This European autonomy requires, in particular, greater cooperation between the parties concerned in the field of defence. Since the initiative for Europe of the President of the Republic, joint programmes such as the creation of the European Defence Fund, the European Intervention Initiative, permanent structured cooperation has been established. The Europartners association is working towards the emergence of reflection and exchanges between stakeholders wishing to contribute to the realisation of a Europe fully participating in international trade and wishing to reconcile global competitiveness with social solidarity. Through various large-scale meetings and conferences, Europartenaires strives to reach out to all audiences to reflesh together and mobilise around the major European issues of our time. The main objective of the conference on defence issues we will organise is to inform citizens, especially young people, about defence issues (sovereignty, inter-state cooperation, cybersecurity, development of common equipment, etc.) in Europe. This meeting will also allow for the emergence of reflections on the issues that constitute current geopolitical issues. During this colloquium, during which we will invite several industry representatives, experts in addition to people invested in the political field, we anticipate that our youngest audience will be able to interact with the various stakeholders and thus discover the professional possibilities of the field. Finally, this major event for our association, for which we will ask for a Fabrique Défense label, will make it possible to bring out proposals and ideas for reflection on the problems that persist around European defence issues. This event will contribute to the development of a European strategic culture by presenting the actions and the European Defence Cooperation Area. Today, European states are coordinating to strengthen their operational capacities and resources in order to ensure the security of the European Union and beyond and thus respond to the threats of our times. The launch of the Permanent Structured Cooperations in 2017 and the European Intervention Initiative in 2018 aim to build a common strategic culture and strengthen the capacity of Europeans to act together. The ongoing multilateral projects that will be part of the topics discussed at this colloquium (the air combat system of the future, the main ground combat system, the modernisation of the Tiger combat helicopter, Eurodrone) aim to strengthen European integration in the field of defence industry. By presenting the military cooperation projects, the colloquium “What defence for Europe of tomorrow?” will allow those present to learn more about the role of the European Union and in particular of France in building a Europe of defence. Through the meeting of defence actors representing the Union and the underlying common strategic culture, the colloquium aims to convey the joint ambition of the member nations. In addition, this conference will make it possible to advance the debate by encouraging the reflection of the participants.
