Event reportThe Thursday Estival is a series of friendly, consumer-friendly meetings around a drink and the Conference on the Future of Europe taking place at the Maison de l’Europe in Paris this summer. Their aim is to engage in citizens’ discussions on Europe that will enrich the Conference on the Future of Europe. The third edition focused on the rule of law. After a brief introduction on the House of Europe and its activities, Marion Plaza, in charge of the Communication of the Representation of the European Commission in Paris, spoke to present the existing European mechanisms to combat abuses against the rule of law. Next, a discussion with Ms. Plaza and the ten participants took place on the issues and questions raised by the previous intervention. Finally, a period of reflection was given to write ideas that enrich the platform of gid://decidim-dife/Decidim::Hashtag/14/COFE and more generally, the European debate. These ideas were presented and discussed during a final round of table. The discussions focused on the fact that the European Union must develop new legal tools to combat authoritarian abuses in the Member States more effectively, in particular through the introduction of new prosecution and sanction mechanisms and better protection for whistle-blowers. The strengthening of the role of European pro-value associations in this struggle was also the subject of debate. This third strand of gid://decidim-dife/Decidim::Hashtag/2740/JeudiEstival was a success both by the richness of the exchanges and by the dynamism of the debate. The participants were motivated and were particularly sensitive about the development of the direct seizure of the European institutions for citizens whose rights have been violated and the importance of strengthening the means of communication within the Member States in order to ensure a diversity of the media.
