La base de la communication, c'est la langue. Or, nous ne nous comprenons pas entre peuples européens. Il faut absolument changer cela.
- Soit en augmentant définitivement et radicalement nos niveaux respectifs en anglais.
- Soit en apprenant pour de bon l'Esperanto ou tout autre langue commune comprise seulement par les Européens.

Je ne pense pas que les traductions automatiques, qui seront de plus en plus performantes à l'avenir, soit une réelle solution à terme.

A mon avis, l'introduction de l'espéranto serait une bonne solution. Au moins elle éviterait que ceux avec une certaine langue maternelle (dans le cas d'espèce l'anglais) profiterait d'un avantâge tout à fait non mérité. Il éxigerait un effort énorme de la part des autres européens pour atteindre le niveau d'un anglophone cultivé - et je sais de quoi je parle : j'apprends et utilise l'anglais de manière active et passive depuis plus de quarante ans, mais j'arrive rarement à m'exprimer avec l'aisance et la facilité de quelqu'un qui l'a appri depuis sa naissance.
Peut-être les anglophones peuvent comprendre pourquoi les autres européens ne sont pas enthousiasmés par l'idée qu'il faut faire de l'anglais la langue commune. Je regrette de le dire, je préférerais ne pas avoir de langue commune si cela devait être l'anglais. Que tout le monde se débrouille d'une manière ou d'une autre, en respectant les éxigences du principe de l'égalité (devant le droit) de toutes les langues européennes.
This anglophone is extremely enthusiastic about getting rid of the idea that English is suitable as an international means of communication because he knows how difficult it is to learn and how it is linked culturally and politically with certain countries and cultures which make it unsuitable as a neutral tool of communication. While English remains the de facto primary language for the EU it will be impossible to deny all the other member states the right to use their own languages according to current EU policy. But if Esperanto were to be adopted as the sole means of communication no one could complain that they were being discriminated against linguistically. And yet, that is just what does happen in practice – if you don't speak English, French or German your language is in the second rank.
Couldn't agree with you more! An anglophile since school days and immersed in the language (and somewhat in the culture) ever since, what still irks me is that I will forever be at a disadvantage in some formal and informal settings, where ease and self-assurance of expression come naturally to the native speaker.
I can put up with the facts of life and life generally being "unfair", let's get on with it. What I vehemently oppose are any attempts to actively make English "more equal than others" in the EU setting. I will not accept it lying down that English is being furthered to the detriment of other languages. By all means let us promote the learning of languages and achieve what the EU Commission once set as a most ambitious goal, that every European should master two foreign languages (two, so factually English PLUS one other) at least passively. Since even this is unlikely to be achieved, my money is on Esperanto as a tool for European intercomprehension: effective and proven.
It is easy to share your views. It takes time and effort to learn and master a foreign language. And after all those years, you still feel that speaking is like writing with the left hand: slow, clumsy and inaccurate.
In my youth, kids had to study two national languages and English at school. It was also quite common that after the age of 13 you studied also German, and even French or Russian. Nowadays, English dominates.
But, of course, school (or broken) English is not good enough if you are working with native speakers. They have a language advantage: You have an accent. You do not know all idioms. You do not know the latest expression, or historical references. Etc.
However, you understand English well enough to know that your 1st language is better than their 1st language. But because English is the common or majority language, you suffer. And if other languages are suffocated, even polyglots cannot compete.
To get even, I used 2 + 1 tactics with my kids.
