I like my nationality. Those seeking to trample over it to some new identity risk the union of nations in favour of a homogeneous nation that will never be.
Would this team play in French/German or Esperanto?
I agree. But i think there should be an European Esport team. The players would have the flag of the nation they live in and the EU flag.
@Karl Fechner : I really agree with you, and this would apply to the Olympic Games.
Yes, maybe the Olympic and professional athletes should represent themselves, irrespective of how many passports they have.
How many UEFA Champions League teams are 100% national?

If both Koreas were able to have one single team in the 2018 Olympics, surely the EU can do it too...
But could the EU team win more Olympic medals in Tokyo than the US and China (combined)?
Not sure that it is the point. I don't see a combined US-China team happening soon.
If you want to compare similar "areas", in terms of size, development, population etc... Then US vs EU is probably a better match.
Maybe. At least, the author of the idea did not mentioned it.
But people might nevertheless be interested in the success of the EU team compared to other teams.
In the 1970s and 1980s, the USSR chess team played against the rest of the world - and won both times. In Tokyo, the “EU team” was not equally superior, but still collected more medals than any other team.

The idea is surely positive and deserves admiration, but down to the Heart... Lets take Football as an example.
If we would form a EU national squad and let it play against let's say Brazil or Argentinia. Who will be watching that and when the time comes for the spectators to return in to the stadiums who would buy tickets to watch that in the stadium?
I guess that only brazilians or argentinians will go watching it, if the do not claim it a foul, that we put all togheter what the continent offers??
Let's say the Starting XI will be Manuel Neuer, Beniamin Pavard, Raphael Varane, Dayot Upamecano, David Alaba, Joshua Kimmich, Frenkie de Jong, Leroy Sané, Thiago Alcantara, Kai Havertz, Robert Lewandowski
Who will full heartedly be supporting that Team?

Ja ich habe da noch Zweifel.
Zumal die europäische Einigung erst noch durch andere Themenfelder vorangetrieben werden muss, wie z.B. einer Fiskalunion, einer Sozialunion und einer Verteidigungsunion. Ich denke wenn da die gröbsten Probleme mit beseitigt werden wie z.B. die soziale Ungleichheit die schon staats- und demokratiegefährdende Ausmaße angenommen hat wie man an den Zustimmungsraten rechtsextremer Parteien sehen kann.
Erst wenn die EU da den Bürgern zeigt, dass sie für diese da ist, wird auch eine europäische Identität gestiftet die sich auch auf den Sport überträgt.

Elkötelezettségüket sok pénzért vásárolták, ilyen identitásra sokan nem vágyunk. Németországban létezik a Schmidt nevet viselő emberek "schmidt" identitása? Minden Schmidt=Schmidt?

This is an excellent proposal! The European sports team events could be extended to other games, too.
Apart from Ryder Cup in golf, The Ocean Race (= Whitbread Around the World Race / Volvo Ocean Race) in sailing, Euro-Asia Cup in table tennis, Weber Cup in bowling, and Mosconi Cup in pool, other sports and games could be sponsored by the EU.
For example, a European team could compete in chess, bridge, go, or poker in an international tournament.
I checked : this morning Europe is first at the Olympic Games in Tokyo … when all our medals are aggregated ! Just so you know … gold silver bronze

This would destroy tradtional rivalries that have added greatly to sports.
