Event report
Context, purpose, subject and structure/methodology of the event:
On the 26th of October, the debate on "The Future of Europe: Across Generations" took place in the „Fryč Bookstore“. The debate aimed to exchange views on where the EU should go in the coming years and how different generation groups perceive the future of Europe. The panelists were Zora Machartová (representative of the non-profit sector, Tulipán, z.s.), Jana Soukupová (founder of the YOUTH initiative, SPEAK UP) and Igor Blahušiak (Director of the Communication on European Affairs). Igor Blahušiak replaced civic activist Jan Šolc who canceled his participation at the last minute due to illness. The moderator of the debate was a journalist, Monika Durajová. After a short opening, the discussion was between speakers and the public held.
Number of participants and their background:
50 participants from the general public, including two deputies officials, young people from the debate club at the F.X Šaldy grammar school, representatives of the TUL university council, seniors
Main ideas suggested by participants and the shared or debated narratives and arguments that led to them:
Overall, the debate was positively affirmative towards the EU and the opportunities it brings. Nevertheless, a few suggestions on improving the functioning of the EU were heard. As a positive side of the EU, participants mentioned among others a free movement of people and good or opportunities to study abroad. Young people mainly raised up the topics such as digitization, science, sustainability, and the Green Deal. The Green Deal, energy, cyber security was addressed also by the middle age and older generations (These topics should also resonate during the Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU). On the other hand, the public was concerned about insufficient communication of the EU and local politicians with citizens - because of that, citizens often do not see the benefits of the EU and instead see the EU as an enemy. The public was afraid that the misunderstanding of Green Deal will cause the uprise of populist parties and even withdrawal of the Czech Republic from the EU. The public thinks the EU should better cooperate across the Member states, act jointly and deepen the integration. The communication between institutions should improve and handling of certain requirements should be faster. Some of the participants were unsure about the competencies of the EU. Besides, the public suggested improving mainly marketing and communication with the beneficiaries of subsidies and people with a lower level of education. EU should also focus more on important issues (such as energy or cybersecurity) and not on the excessive details.
Propostions:
1) Communication between authorities: Improve communication between Member States' authorities and speed up processes (recognition of diplomas, maternity care, pensions ...)
2)Approach citiziens better: Bringing the EU closer to the people. Humanize communication even for people with lower education.
3)Proceed with caution in integration:Advance integration so that the EU can act in areas where cannot now (eg health policy) but with cautiousness.
4)Energy policy: Improve EU energy policy. To promote nuclear energy and the self-sufficiency of EU countries in this area.
5)Improve marketing: Improve EU marketing - for example in the case of positive impacts of subsidy programs.
6)New scholarships: E + scholarships for students from countries where human rights are not respected.
7)Clear rules: The EU should act proudly, set the conditions clearly and not be too hyper-correct.
