Strategies for the teaching of the Hungarian language and culture in Austria and South Tyrol, as well as new challenges and opportunities in mother tongue teaching for the future of Europe
Event report available
The main objective of the conference is to get an overview about the existing conditions of the education of the Hungarian language and culture and to get familiar with it through the current methodological practices in the framework of different institutional (school, university) and non- institutional but still organised (scout associations, language schools and cultural institutions) forms in Austria and South-Tirol. Secondly, its target is to let teachers and instructors be informed about the educational and national endeavour of Hungarian natonal policy by giving them the opportunity to get familiar with the tender possibilities and ask for help as far as the realization of their already planned programmes and their innovative methods of the education of the Hungarian language are concerned.

Event reportFor the second time in a row, conference was held in conjunction with a meeting of diaspora organisations in Western Austria, the main aim of which was to share good practices in Hungarian language teaching and to strengthen cooperation between the organisations. The main patrons of the event were Árpád János Potápi, Secretary of State for National Policy, and Katalin Szili, Prime Minister's Envoy. The event was attended by Dr. Orsolya Maróti, Head of the Department for International Hungarian Language Training and Education of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, according to whom the practices introduced in Innsbruck are forward-looking. The programme was made possible with the support of the Cultural Diplomacy Department, the Science Diplomacy Department and the Consulate General in Innsbruck. The Consulate General of Hungary in Innsbruck and the Institute of Linguistics of the University of Innsbruck organised the second stage of the conference series "The Hungarian Diaspora in Unity" in hybrid format between 12-13 November 2021. This time again, a two-day meeting and conference with the representatives of organisations from Western Austria and the Association of Hungarians from South Tyrol was held. The meeting was attended by a wide range of participants, including leaders of the Hungarian diaspora associations of Salzburg, Tyrol, the autonomous county of South Tyrol, as well as the new emerging association of Vorarlberg, for whom the event was perhaps the most experiential. The main aim of the event was to bring Hungarian organisations operating independently in the provinces together, to generate an exchange of experience and cooperation, and to inform them about the possibilities the Hungarian Government provides towards diaspora oganizations. Following the official conference programme on Friday, an exhibition of works created by Hungarian artists living in diaspora was held in the event hall of the Consulate General, opened by Secretary of State Árpád János Potápi. Following the official conference programme on Friday, an exhibition of works by artists from the Hungarian diaspora was held in the event hall of the Consulate General, opened by State Secretary Árpád János Potápi. The material of the travelling exhibition was brought together by the House of Hungarian Heritage under the direction of Krisztina Csibi. The first host of the exhibition was the Consulate General in Innsbruck. The second day of the programme focused on "best practice" suggestions regarding education, and the professional training of teachers continued in the framework of workshops. Participants were introduced to different interactive and creative methods that can be used in language teaching. Bilingualism/multilingualism, language awareness and identity were also discussed. The Consulate General of Milan was also represented at the two-day event, another good occasion to strengthen cooperation between embassies. The success of the meeting is confirmed by the fact that the conference series was being held for the second time. The third stage of the conference is planned to be organized in spring 2022. The event is an exemplary initiative, as the dialogue that started in the summer continued, and a channel was established among the participants, which will faciliate further cooperation. The conference is an opportunity to develop the education system, to bring together and support the diaspora, with visible results in terms of increased participation and structure. It is hoped that the host country will also become more attentive towards Hungarians, not only in the traditional areas (Burgenland and Vienna).
