Event report
On Monday 18, the 11th ASPE International Conference was held at the University of West Attica, in collaboration with the University’s Social Policy Research Laboratory, under the title “The role of large families in the future of Europe”. The full programme can be found here. The opening was attended by the main civil and religious authorities of Greece. During the event, the cities of Athens, Odessa, Nea Smyrni, Glyfada and Alimos received their diplomas as new members of the European Network of Family-Friendly Municipalities. Kostas Bakoyannis, Mayor of Athens and father of four children, spoke on behalf of all of them, highlighting support for families with children, and specifically large families, as one of the main priorities of all of these municipality. On behalf of the European Large Families Confederation (ELFAC), speakers included its president, Regina Maroncelli, who spoke about the present and future of large families; its secretary general, Raúl Sánchez, who spoke about good practices in supporting large families in Europe; and Kinga Joo, vice-president of the Hungarian association of large families, NOE, who spoke about the opinion of the European Economic and Social Committee, of which she is a member, on the demographic problem, as well as the Hungarian experience. The director of ASPE, Mr. Charalambos Pavlos, presented the main actions of ASPE in favour of large families during the 90 years since its foundation.
