Caravanserai of Hope (project onder voorbehoud)
At this moment we are applying for the finances for this international project. It is dependend on tis support, since our organisations can finance a part of it.
The Caravanserai of Hope
Project plan, outline
The Landesarmutskonferenz Baden Württemberg (D.) and the Maison de la Citoyenneté Mondiale Alliance Rhin-Supérieur Oberrhein from Mulhouse (F.) have already been working together for some decades. They see this cross-Rhine collaboration as something that adds extra value to their advocacy and support work. From the federal state of Baden-Württemberg, where Caritas, Diakonia, the Bundesbetroffeneninitiative wohnungsloser Menschen (BBI) and other non-governmental organisations within the Landesarmutskonferenz cooperate, the Rhine is not seen as a border to France, but as a place to meet each other. This same feeling lives at the Maison du Monde, located in Mulhouse, in the Bas-Rhine department. They work together with the Mouvement national des chômeurs du region Bas-Rhine and others, including as a third partner an NGO from Basel (CH.). Together they are developing a plan to have a "Caravan of Hope" pass through the Rhine cities, drawing attention to increasing poverty and exclusion.
Since one of the representatives of the Landesarmutskonferenz, on behalf of the Federal German Nationale Armutskonferenz, is also on the European board of the European Anti Poverty Network (www.eapn.eu) and enters into conversation with the Dutch board member, who represents EAPN Netherlands, this NGO becomes invited to this initiative. This since Arnhem is also a city on the Rhine, which could be included. This creates a plan to start in Berlin, via Hanover, then Arnhem, to Stuttgart and Freiburg. From there it goes via Mulhouse, Basel, Voivres and Nancy to Paris where we are received by members of the French Assembly. And then corona comes in and the plan falls apart.
However, we did not give up, but looked at what is possible and how that could take shape in 2021, after the pandemic that is. As a caravan passes stopping-places, where the animals are cared for, rested and the merchandise is sold and replenished, the plan of the “Caravanserai van de Hoop” arises, which takes place in the three regions of Baden Württemberg, Bas Rhine and Gelderland, with a short visit to Basel when we are passing Mulhouse. Corona not only changes the plan, it also changes the purpose of the project. If we first wanted to draw attention to increasing poverty, unemployment and exclusion, now we add “Hope for the Future”.
Goal: to show people that even in difficult times, which place extra burdens on the low-income and benefit dependent, there is a sense of togetherness, solidarity and continuing to work for positive change. That, no matter how dark the time may be, there is always Hope that things will change again. We want to provide this Hope, infect people with it and ask them to reach it further, so that we can move forward with new energy after the pandemic.
The program for 2021, whereby we obviously have to take the corona conditions into account, knowing that we may have to shift the data again:
The first stopping-place (station) will be Stuttgart, the capital of Baden Württemberg. Here we will stay for 3 days among the projects around the Paulinenbrücke, such as a food bank, a place for the homeless and other organisations. A meeting with the social-mayor and a delegation of the city council is also on the program. The visit is planned for the second half of July. On the first day of the meeting, delegations will arrive in town and get together for an evening snack.
Next morning will offer a first opportunity to meet active people around Paulinenbrücke, get a glimpse of the local scene, the city-district and its multi faceted history at the very peripheries of Stuttgart city centre – Meet Paule-Club, distributers of food and care for the shelterless. Get an interpretation of the Big Picture there.
Later that day there will be Round Tables in nearby St.Maria church, where representatives of ‘Theater an der Rampe’, ‘Stadtlücken’, ‘Landesarmutskonferrenz’, ‘St. Maria’, ‘BBI’, ‘Paule-Club’, street-worker and welfare-associations discuss and evaluate the current situation.
In the evening we will meet again after refreshing ourselves. W will reflect the day, talk about our emotions, raise questions and aspects.
The following day will be opened by a talk with the City of Stuttgart:
Social-mayor, social-planner, interested parties from the municipal council. Reflecting on the
municipal strategies and sensitivities at Paulinenbrücke. We will have an eye on - and from the perspective of police interventions.
In the afternoon: Program on ‘Tag der Basis’ (Grassroots-Day) 2021, Paule-
Club and the Theater an der Rampe, implementation of the project "Housing for all -
#paulinenbrücke", cooperation Paule and Landesarmutskonferenz Baden Württemberg.
In the evening: Evaluation and balancing of information and experience: Paulinenbrücke as
an example of self-mandatory of socially excluded people in urban Stuttgart society. In between success, empowerment and mills that grind slowly…
Next day in the morning: delegations will depart from Stuttgart – our international network of nations lives on! During the entire duration of the visit filmmaker Uwe Kassai will accompany essential parts of the encounters with his camera.
Then from 8 to 11 September, the delegations will come to Arnhem, where we are currently preparing a program. The contours look like this. The cooperating organizations are EAPN Nederland and the Onze DROOM foundation from Brummen.
Here we start on 9 September with an introductory meeting and a visit to Onze DROOM, where we get to know the participants and receive information about the project. In the afternoon we visit organizations in Arnhem, such as EcoVrede, the homeless and others. We also want to organize a meeting with the municipality and / or the province in the afternoon. On day two we have a discussion meeting in the morning, in which organizations participate that also participate in the market -the caravanserai- in the afternoon. Here too, getting to know each other, exchanging information and recording points of view. We want to organize the afternoon market in Arnhem at a central point (near the dragon) in the center of Arnhem. Every organization has its own position. At the moment this means that we have already manned 8 positions. In addition to the six organizations that organize the Karavanserai, the Coöperatieve Herstelgroep GGZ has announced that it would like to participate, we invite EcoVrede and it is discussed within Sterk Uit Parmoede from Groningen.
This way, in addition to Arnhem and regional organizations, other organizations are also involved in the second day. Think of Street Vision from Amsterdam, working with the younger homeless and Inclusion Netherlands.
The market will be cheered up by Theater and music group Momo, in which people with disabilities play the leading role. They have indicated that they would like to be part of the whole. Slowly the outdoor activity arises with which we want to surprise the public and let them share in our Hope for change.
In the meantime, organizations from the Czech Republic and two NGOs from Romania have indicated that they are interested in participating, so that our project can be expanded which can take shape in 2022. For Arnhem we would like to have a small delegation from the Czech Republic already participate.
All organizations involved in this project work for and with people who live in poverty or experience social exclusion. However, that doesn't mean we want to put the project in some kind of bubble. On the contrary, the outdoor activities, such as the market in Arnhem, are intended for everyone. By reaching out to each other, we can change something. We would like to do that together. Hope is important to everyone, regardless of position or circumstances. During the two days in and around Arnhem, we aim to infect almost 200 to 300 people with our enthusiasm and to give them something to talk about, so that De Hoop can also become a “running fire”. This is a deliberate word spelling, because if we succeed in raising sufficient financial resources, we want to hire the choir “Wildfire” for the market. They sing songs about peace, human rights, the environment and for political justice.
As soon as we are sure that corona will not disturb the Arnhem caravanserai in September, we will start a media campaign, in which we mainly want to use the market as a trigger. The organizers for Arnhem, EAPN Nederland (www.eapnned.nl) and the Onze DROOM Brummen foundation (www.onzedroombrummen.nl) are each taking on part of this work. In addition, we use the websites of both organizations, their Facebook sites and other social media on which they are active, such as Twitter and Yoors.
After Arnhem, we want to organize a meeting at Onze DROOM in Brummen, for which the participating organizations are invited to look back, evaluate and who knows how we can make the 'Caravanserai van de Hoop' pull as a caravan within the Netherlands. We see this project as a first step towards a solidarity movement that will pop up here and there in the coming years to draw attention to poverty and social exclusion and to bring and pass on Hope.
The first steps have been taken, we are now requesting financial support. If this is also successful, we will enter into further discussions with the municipality of Arnhem, the province of Gelderland, organizations from the city and the region and with organizations with which we like to work together, such as the Network Client Councils in Healthcare. As far as we are concerned, it will be a major international festival that will be talked about long afterwards and that certainly deserves to be followed in another place.
The third and for 2021 last visit is situated at Mulhouse, Barl in Switserland and Voivres in the Vosges, where we will also visit project against unemployment.

to guarantee the project we need the United States of Europe with a federal Constitution..!!
As a member of the Board of the Federal Alliance of European Federalists (FAEF), I am working on the organisation of an online Citizens' Convention whose aim is to try, together with many Europeans, to establish, from the bottom-up, a federal Europe. The President of FAEF, Dr Leo Klinkers, inviting people to participate in this Citizens' Convention. We are aiming for a group of 55(+) people who, because of their knowledge or federalist attitude, would like to be members of this Convention. We are also inviting thousands of Europeans to support that Convention. Leo Klinkers' message shows the goal so as to work from the start of the Convention (2 October 2021) to improve a draft federal constitution for Europe together and then submit it to the people of Europe for ratification.
