Development and Migration: Contradictions and Trends

30-minute dialogue with a speaker specialising in the topic. The principle of ‘leaving no one behind’ requires special and systematic attention to the most vulnerable groups — including migrants and refugees — but also to make everyone aware and accountable of the need to undo erroneous myths and narratives that do not reflect the richness of the link between migration and development, favouring the perpetuation of discrimination that cannot take place in a Europe that is said to be inclusively and socially fair, promoting the values of equality and diversity. To what extent have migration policies contributed to the achievement of development objectives and the protection of human rights? Are the costs of inconsistencies taken into account, or are other issues and measures considered more urgent or relevant to the detriment of development and human rights concerns? Is there adequate political will, mechanisms and means to implement more coherent policies in linking migration and development? In the face of the securitisation of migration, it is necessary to strengthen the migration-development binomial, recognising and encouraging the contribution of migrants to the development of countries of origin and destination through concrete policies and measures at global, regional, national and local levels.
