Give British people who are resident in an EU country EU-wide rights
The lives of British people who made Europe their home prior to Brexit is damaged considerably as a result of an event they did not vote for. British people who have been living and contributing to the European economy in a lawful manner for years had their EU-wide rights stripped over night and are limited to the country of their residence currently.
Not only can they now live and work only in the country of their current residence, they are also impacted by the citizenship rules of some countries negatively where dual citizenship is not permitted.
Prior to Brexit, the British people resident in the EU enjoyed a true freedom of movement across the EU. One of the promises of Brexit was that the British citizens are going to enjoy the same rights as they were enjoying prior to Brexit, however this is far from being the truth.
British people have lawfully contributed to the EU for decades and now being penalised for something they did not vote for.
UPDATE 20.04.2021
Following some comments, I need to clarify a few points.
* This idea is about British people who made Europe their home BEFORE Brexit, who carried European Union passports. Most were born a European Union citizen.
* British people in the EU voted to remain in the EU - yet their rights are taken away.
* This idea is not "blaming" the EU or anyone else. This is an idea that needs to be debated.

* Britiske borgere i EU stemte for at blive i EU — men deres rettigheder fjernes. You voted for it. Bye.
British people in the EU did not vote on the referendum. They were not able to do it.
I don't understand, why did British people who live in EU not vote? If you have British citizenship you should be able to vote even if you currently live in a different country.
I also don't think it's fair of you blaming EU, since UK left EU and not vice versa. I'm sure EU citizens who currently live in the UK have the same problems as you do. The best thing you can do is ask for citizenship in the country you currently live. Politics between multiple countries is a delicate matter, it will probably take years for some things to get fixed or changing for the better.
British citizens living in the EU for 15 or more years could not vote on the Brexit referendum!
I sympathise with Jack's feelings and probably can understand that he and thousands like him feel that they have been let down by both the UK and the EU. Mateo I do not think that this should be a question of putting blame on the EU or the UK or of trying to understand why the Brits voted to leave the EU. What should matter is addressing the negative effects on both EU and UK citizens that Brexit has created. Of course this is a complex issue involving sensitive decisions about sovereignty, citizenship entitlement etc but different EU member states have adopted different approaches to situations like that stated by Jack. The UK did not vote to leave Germany or The Netherlands but the EU. Therefore I would like to argue that procedures of how to deal with UK nationals who resided in the EU before the Brexit referendum should be applicable across the EU.
I also do sympathise with people who have this problems, but i disagree with you. I know that EU is far from perfect, but it's a fact that UK politicians lied to their people. I'm positive fake news had big effect on the voting resoults. I know it's unfair to blame either, but over the years of Brexit (especially toward the end) i read and watched so many negative news about EU from UK people, blaming EU for everything.
I agree
British people in the EU did NOT for it. They were not even asked to vote for it.

You have same rights & obligations as EU citizens trying to emigrate to the UK after Brexit...... that´s life
This debate is about those who emigrated BEFORE Brexit, not after.
I understand, then why do not try to get the local citizenship in your host country?
It is a petty all this situation , but you are an English citizen first therefore you need to accomplish the EU regulations as any other foreign citizens

The UK government negotiated a Brexit without these rights and specifically opposed moves by some EU politicians of introducing a European citizenship / passport, as it did not want UK citizens to "have split loyalties". So now UK citizens living in Europe have to decide whether to take on the citizenship of their host countries (if possible), or stay with limited rights in Europe. It would not make sense for the EU to give special rights to UK citizens- any more than they already have if they arrived before 1st January.
Absolutely. But, the problem is that when the UK was in the EU, their citizens were European Union citizens. And for Brexit, the European Union citizens were not asked to give their opinion on this matter and overnight, their rights were taken off of their hands. They did not vote for such change.
Imagine, as an EU citizen today, a German citizen's right to retire, live or work in another EU country is removed and Germans were not consulted in such change. Would that be acceptable? That is my point. This is an EU issue. An EU citizens right to live and work in any EU country has been removed without the very EU citizens having any say in it.
I'm not pretending that any of this is fair. As an EU citizen who had been living his entire adult life in the UK at the time of the referendum, I couldn't vote in it either. After the result, I decided to leave the UK. Those who had both citizenship AND residency in the UK were able to vote, and voted to take away people's rights. They were willing to sacrifice their own rights (so be it), and they were willing to sacrifice the rights of their fellow citizens who did not want Brexit, all to take away some rights that they did not want Europeans to enjoy. The UK gov't then pursued a hard Brexit, shredding their own citizens' rights to appeal to Leavers. None of that is fair.
However, those UK citizens who have lived in other EU countries can (mostly) naturalise, and thereby regain EU citizens' privileges. If they live in a country that does not allow dual citizenship, they can choose to relinquish their UK citizenship. I don't think the EU should extend Brits' privileges any further.
I completely agree. Now any citizen of any EU country purchasing property in another EU country, raising a family, and investing in a business, profession, of future in that country is vulnerable. Sadly, I somehow doubt Britain will be the last country to leave the EU. So everyone residing in the EU should take note as it could happen to them.
I also cannot understand the logic of the host countries restricting the right to work outside of the country. Surely they would prefer to tax someone on 100K + Euro annual income, which I earned prior to Brexit, versus the paltry earnings I squeak by on that barely meet the taxable threshold. Give me my ability to work outside the country as I did as an EU passport holder and I’m happy to pay you 40% tax for the privilege. Now, it appears my future will be to be another social welfare recipient. Totally stupid in my mind and not reflective of the reality that many people work globally. This is after all the 21st century and not year 1300!

The British people voted for Brexit, so now naturally they have to live with their choice.
It turns out you can't actually have your cake and eat it too.
The British people in the EU did NOT vote for it. Let's assume you live in Spain and Portugal votes for something that relates to your life in Spain. Would you agree?
That the British people in the EU could not vote in the Brexit referendum is none of our responsibility; it lays solely at the British government's feet. We (I say we, I mean the EU) should not have to further accommodate British citizens for something their government/compatriots did.
Put it another way: since the United Kingdom is now a third country (like Protecting our fundamental values: Mechanism on Democracy, Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights others in the world), why should the British people have any more rights to all those things you refer to in your proposal more than any other citizen from any other country?
(Please ignore the above link, I have no idea how that got there)
I think you did not understand my original post. The idea is NOT asking for future Brits to be treated differently. It is asking for a debate to consider the lives of Brits who were already in the EU before Brexit, who did not vote to leave the EU.
And yes it is "your" responsibility, as much as the UK government's responsibility, because we are talking about European Union citizens. Many of those were "born" to be an EU citizen and their rights are taken away from them.
But we are no longer talking about about EU citizens because the UK left the EU! Regular citizens are liable for the decisions their government makes (which gives them skin in the game, giving them an incentive to vote in their countries' elections). If the idea of European citizenship is that important to those you say are "born to be EU citizens", I think they would be most welcome to apply for citizenship of their EU country of residence.
You are not hearing me out nor reading what I write. Wish you all the best.

I completely understand your viewpoint and partially agree with it.
I think British citizens residing in a EU member state prior to Brexit should be given a fast-track access to citizenship in the member they reside so that they can enjoy EU citizenship even if not through their British passports.

IT WAS THE UK THAT REFUSED THE EU PROPOSAL OF EUROPEAN CITIZENSHIP FOR ITS CITIZENS LIVING IN THE EU. UNLUCKILY, AFTER BREXIT YOU HAVE BECOME A 3RD WORLD COUNTRY. BY THE WAY, ANY 3RD WORLD COUNTRY CITIZEN CAN GET HIS CITIZENSHIP THAT ENABLES HIM TO TRAVEL AND WORK FREELY IN ANY EU COUNTRY ONLY AFTER SOME YEARS OF PERMANENT RESIDENCE DEPENDING OF EACH EU COUNTRY'S IMMIGRATION POLICY.
CORRECTION: ... DEPENDING ON EACH EU COUNTRY'S IMMIGRATION POLICY.

The British left EU bcs of forced immigration. Who was not receiving, was called racist, anti black and anti Muslims, and this one is entirely EU fault. Europeans LOST trust in EU. I don’t blame the British people here.
More countries want to go out bcs of this. They shout human rights and that is humanitarian to receive, but they ignore Christians killed there and yaziddi. The propaganda is loud for money and yes, is EU fault here. Migration should be CONTROLLED ! Not everyone should migrate and people should have some psychological checks.
The UK was always in control of non-EU migration.
If British governments decided not to control it, the EU cannot be blamed for that.
EU migration and extra-EU migration are regulated differently and should not be confused.
The British voted to leave the EU therfore all British have the same obligations that the immigrants from non-EU countries. Sorry
This is simply not feasible.
Which is the basis for that? How can that be justified?
We are EU citizens through our national citizenship.
I am an Italian citizen who is an EU citizen through his Italian citizenship for instance.
If a country leaves the EU, its citizens retain their own nationality but lose EU citizenship.
How could that be otherwise?
I hope I do not sound harsh. I sympathise with you, but the solution you suggest cannot be realised.
I hope you are allowed to stay in the EU country where you live and that you can become a citizen of that country (and as a consequence an EU citizen) soon if that is what you wish.
I think this is a good idea, but unfortunately it's framed as a British/brexit issue. However, the wider concept of a common EU visa / migration system is a compelling one. Harmonising the system to a common visa regime offers many advantages.
Allowing migrants who have been awarded a legal migration status in a country mobility and residency rights across the EU stops the "citizenship for sale" competition at a stroke.
A common visa regime prevents angst between EU countries accusing each other of being either "soft" on migrants or erecting "fortresses".
Gives the EU a huge advantage in attracting skilled workers, researchers and artists by offering a much larger pool of options and opportunities.
Benefits migrants by giving them access to the whole EU, giving them the best chances for improving their quality of life and finding a good home.
UK's people voted to leave EU, so now you, british people, have to live with that.
If you want EU-wide rights, you can quit your british citizenship, if necessary, and ask for a UE-country citizenship.
British people need to take up their grievances with their government.
British people are not better than anyone else and do not deserve special treatment by the EU. The British people will face the consequenses of their decision to leave the EU and it is not the EUs responsibility to make Brexit painless. The benefits of membership cannot be bestowed upon citizens of countries outside the EU/EEA, like the UK.

I'm sorry for whatever hostility and rejection you may have encountered. As you probably have already found out, the UK's reputation inside the EU has been affected in a very negative way by Brexit.
I totally agree with your proposal that people from the UK that chose the EU as their place of residence should have the EU citizenship and with it all the rights that other EU citizens have. It is trully a pity that many people lost many of their rights over night, one year ago.
It is actually a pity that the UK even made such a desicion. Brexit was the decision of a generally uninformed or misinformed people who can't be blamed for. Especially the ones that actually voted to remain or the ones that didn't get to vote at all. The truth is that the UK was always sort of the "black sheep" in the EU. Even historically, the UK was often somewhat "detached" from european politics and issues.
The UK will eventually re-join the EU, out of necessity. I hope you won't have to wait for that day.
Adding to my comment (I reached the characters' limit) I would like to shortly justify why I am in favor of your idea/proposal. Giving all the british people, the ones that resided in an EU country (of course excluding the UK) before Brexit and had EU citizenship, back their EU rights and their old citizenship would be a great idea. Apart of being more humane towards a people that ones were part of our block such a move would positively affect the opinions of british people residing in the UK about the EU. The now tense relationship with the UK would slightly become more relaxed and also the time between the present and the future eventuality of the UK rejoining the EU would possibly be decreased.
