Brief description of the Panel Discussion A key national priority of the Hungarian Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe is the advancement of interreligious dialogue. The aim of the religious dimension of intercultural dialogue is to strengthen mutual respect and understanding, tolerance, peaceful coexistence and peace among religions and faiths. Following the proliferation of challenges to religious peace within and beyond Europe in recent years, it has become vital that after the last annual exchange on religious dimension held in 2017, religious dialogue and freedom of religion or belief should return to the focus of the Council of Europe. Hungary has launched a dedicated government policy in 2016 to aid persecuted Christians around the world, after which it has extended its support to other religious groups also. Responding to Recommendation 1957 (2011) on “Violence against Christians in the Middle East” set forth by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, aiding communities suffering violence based on religious persecution through humanitarian means has come into the centre of Hungarian foreign policy. As a result the Hungary Helps Program has entailed the provision of critical aid to affected communities in a way that peoples of all faiths who live side-by-side may benefit thereof. Of the two events planned in connection with this priority during the Hungarian chairmanship, the opening of the Hungarian National Gallery’s exhibition Cross-in-Fire in Strasbourg aims to raise awareness of the drivers and nature of modern-day religious persecution, while the experts’ panel discussion on the nexus of humanitarian aid and religious liberty aims to highlight the importance of holistic approaches to advancing interreligious peace, entailing traditional diplomatic and human rights mechanisms as well as humanitarian aid.
