Event reportThe webinar focused on highlighting from different perspectives the steps taken to combat the pandemic, what has been learnt and what could be done. Richard Bergström, Sweden's vaccine coordinator in connection with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and Sweden's supply of the covid-19 vaccine, reminded the public the (1)problems of the national health agencies/ systems in the EU related to investing in the research of the Covid-19 vaccines and (2)export and production difficulties generated by closed borders in 2020. Richard Bergström chose to speak on the role of the European Commission to drive the EU through the pandemic with unanimous support of the Member States, emphasizing the its clear accountability link seconded by health services in the EU and his crucial role in Sweden, of advising decisions based on scientific evidence and political and financial risks. Dr Andrea Ammon, ECDC Director, brought into discussion also the role of the NITAC (the national immunization technical advisory committee) into adopting a common framework of the Covid-19 vaccine roll-out in the EU and into organising stress tests for the roll-out with the help of Member States. Among lessons learnt, Dr Andrea Ammon, mentioned the common coordinated approach in the EU, suggesting its extension to a global one. Christian Danielsson, Head of the European Commission Representation in Sweden, argued on the complexity of the new responsibilities developed at the level of European Commission, ECDC and Member States, under a high level of uncertainty. He added also the criticism that the Commission received: a high level of optimism with regards to delivery of the vaccine that didn't match the reality of vaccine production. The EU received by the end of April 2021 164million doses of vaccine. All speakers agreed that future reflection on preparedness, common EU recommendations on vaccines adopted at national level, new roles developed by ECDC and EMA, what other nations do (the USA), an improved decision making process during a pandemic should all be taken into account. At international level, Christian Danielsson spoke on the Covax initiative and on his vision related to speeding the vaccination of the rest of the citizens of the world.
