Event report available
In light of environmental and health concerns, EVIA has organized a joint event that will discuss and highlight the impact of IAQ on our well-being.
This event is sponsored by MEP Sirpa Pietikäinen, chair of the European Parliament Interest Group on Allergy and Asthma.
The European Commission will be represented by Ms Serena Pontoglio, Team Leader in DG Ener Unit B3, on Buildings policy and renovation wave implementation.
Joining us in our panel discussion:
Stylianos Kephalopoulos
Dr. Stylianos Kephalopoulos is scientific officer of the European Commission since 1993. He works for the DG Joint Research Centre’s Directorate ‘Health, Consumers and Reference Materials’, F.7 - Knowledge for Health and Consumer Safety Unit.

Alice Chapman-Hatchett
Alice Chapman-Hatchett is President of EPHA, the European Public Health Alliance.. Alice was elected President in 2020, after having served as Vice-President since 2018. She has a particular interest in representing EPHA in discussions on health equity and public health more broadly. Alice has extensive European and public sector experience in creating international health projects and partnerships. She has 14 years’ experience in public health, in areas including diabetes, dementia, sexual health, health systems, social inclusion, men’s mental health and obesity. Currently, she is Director of the Health and Europe Centre, a social enterprise in the UK’s NHS which works to bring European learning to the local NHS, focusing on health inequalities and social determinants of health.

Corinne Mandin
Dr. Corinne Mandin earned her PhD in environmental chemistry from the University of Rennes, France. She has been working on human exposure to chemicals in indoor environments, first at INERIS (French national institute for industrial environment and risks) for 8 years, and now at CSTB (French scientific and technical center for building) that she joined in 2009. She currently leads the French Indoor Air Quality Observatory, created by the French government in 2001 to carry out nationwide surveys on indoor air quality (IAQ) in buildings. She is a member of the “expert committee related to air” at the French Agency for environmental health. She collaborates with the World Health Organization and the European Joint Research Center. She was involved in several European research projects (SINPHONIE, OFFICAIR, ALDREN). She is now the President of ISIAQ, the International Society for Indoor Air Quality.

The European Ventilation Industry Association (EVIA) was established in Brussels in July 2010. EVIA’s mission is to represent the views and interests of the ventilation industry and serve as a platform between all the relevant European stakeholders involved in the ventilation sector, such as decision-makers at the EU level as well as our partners in EU Member States. Our membership is composed of more than 45 member companies and 6 national associations across Europe, realising an annual turnover of over 7 billion euros and employing more than 45,000 people in Europe.

EVIA aims to promote highly energy efficient ventilation applications across Europe, with high consideration for health and comfort aspects. Fresh and good indoor air quality is a critical element of comfort and contributes to keeping people healthy in buildings.
Event report
For years, the focus has been on fight outdoor air quality. However, in a recent report the WHO pinpointed that people spend 90 % of their time indoors. Yet, IAQ remains largely unregulated, even if there is evidence that air pollution makes us vulnerable to diseases and infections. The COVID-19 crisis has been an eye-opening moment and shed light on the importance of IAQ. There now is clear momentum to tackle indoor air pollution by updating the relevant EU policies, starting with the new Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD). Speakers insisted on the importance of quickly mainstreaming IAQ within the European regulatory framework, to protect Europeans’ health in particular low-income and vulnerable populations. To this end, a coordinated and coherent implementation of Indoor Environmental Quality-related (IEQ) requirements in buildings-related policies is needed. Common health guidelines to promote efficient ventilation throughout Europe are also essential.Related Ideas
