We do not have a backup planet, so Europe has taken the lead in tackling climate change and pollution and has launched the Green Deal. This means changes in all areas of our lives, from travel or residence to eating and eating habits. However, changes will not occur instantly: the agreement and long-term involvement of all people, businesses and states are important in their implementation. We will not save the planet if we act alone. What impact will the EU Green Deal have on each of us? Energy, agriculture, transport, other areas where change is most needed or can bring the fastest changes? What solutions are more useful: reduction or enhancement of pollution absorption (e.g. by expanding green spaces)? How to encourage Europe to follow the rest of the world? What action is needed to make everyone choose more sustainable solutions? On Thursday 2 December 2021, at 4 p.m., you are invited to take part in a remote discussion on Europe’s future of climate change and environment. During the event there will be a workshop of ideas, during which we will find answers to what changes are needed to achieve a safer and greener future for Europe and the world. Experts will provide insights on the topical issues in this field and join the workshop: Virginijus Sinkevičius, European Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Jean Monnet Chair Professor Ramūnas Vilpišauskas, Professor of the Vilnius University Institute for International Relations and Political Science (VU TSPMI), and Lina Paškevičiūtė, President of the Environmental Coalition. Nine citizens’ debates take place throughout Lithuania, discussing problems and possible solutions in key areas of EU governance. During the events, the most prominent experts in their field will share insights and develop ideas with participants/participants in the future of Europe. This debate is part of the Conference on the European Union. The discussion cycle is organised by the European Commission Representation in Lithuania, Europe Direct Centres, Vilnius University Institute for International Relations and Political Science and Jean Monnet Chair Professor Ramūnas Vilpišauskas. The event is co-financed by the European Union’s Erasmus+ programme.
Event report
The event took place on 2 December 2021 from 4 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. remotely. The event consisted of an interactive discussion between environmental and EU experts (European Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Virginijus Sinkevičius, VU TSPMI Jean Monnet Chair Professor Vilpišauskas and the Chair of the Environmental Coalition Lina Paškevičiūtė) and the subsequent workshop. The participants were divided into 6 groups and discussed with experts and moderators the key issues in Europe’s environment, climate change and concrete solutions. The main issues discussed included pollution taxes (incentive and sanction mechanisms), ways of changing consumption changes, alternative energy sources, less environmentally harmful vehicles, etc. Participants’ suggestions were placed on the Sli.do platform, commented by experts, and during the joint vote the ideas were ranked according to relevance. The first part of the event was attended by 100 people and the second by just over 50, including politicians, public sector employees, students, teachers and students.Related Ideas
