Climate change and the environment

Debat om Fremtidens Europa på Kruses Gymnasium - Klima & Miljø
New Europe. On 17 November, the European Commission is expected to come up with its proposal for a regulation to stop EU citizens’ contribution to deforestation and forest burns around the world. Deforestation and degradation of forest areas are pushing forest capacity and the planet has lost 420 million hectares of forest since 1990. This is mainly due to continued expansion of agricultural production, where demand for meat, soya beans and palm oil, among other things, helps to drive deforestation. The planet’s forests are home to the majority of terrestrial species and, in particular, tropical forests play an important role — both as biodiverse hotspots and as an important player in limiting climate change. We can help stop deforestation in the EU if we choose to adopt and implement a strong legal framework that will ensure European and Danish consumers from buying deforestation products. In doing so, we ensure that forests and important natural areas are not cleared for the sake of our consumption. Denmark has an important role to play. If we want, we can help to ensure that this particular legislation is ambitious enough and at the same time puts concrete demands on companies and their supply chains. On 25 October, Jacob Bjelskov Jørgensen, project manager at New Europe at the Conference on the Future of Europe and the climate campaign #Together4Forest, will therefore help us learn how EU legislation can work in practice. Based on his experience with the EU’s most successful climate campaign ever, #Togther4Forest, will explain how and what you as a citizen can use the EU for in the climate struggle and why you need to use the Conference on the Future of Europe to express your opinion.
