The New European Bauhaus calls citizens to imagine and craft beautiful, sustainable, inclusive places, starting from their own neighbourhoods.

We have launched a call early January this year to collect concrete examples of such places, and ideas for new ones, along with the inevitable challenges they face. Through the New European Bauhaus website, we have collected more than 1700 inputs, from direct experiences, to outcomes of local conversation and finally studies and papers. We have made qualitative analysis of the inputs to check the first trends and messages. Most of the contributions come from small organisations and tend to illustrate how global challenges can and should be tackled at local level

Three key topics emerged from our making sense of this initial contributions (still in draft mode):

1. A strong drive to reconnect with nature, that is expressed by several examples introducing nature and nature-based principles in inhabited spaces


2. Repeated examples that illustrate forms of value creation and exchange that help to concretise an economy of belonging;


3. A transversal attention in rebalancing resources, reducing inequalities through inclusive practices and governance models.

These three topics are transversal, they are used in building new public and private places, from the individual scale to the global one.

Prior to the 2021 R&I Days, in June 2021, we have also conducted 3 co-creation citizen engagement activities in Poland, Estonia and Bulgaria. 120 randomly selected citizens from these 3 countries participated contributing with ideas to the question: “How do we want to live together in a post-COVID-19 era?”. Also in this case, the key topics that emerged were:

• reconnecting cities to nature


• remaking mobility


• transgenerational conviviality: designing inclusive and convivial spaces for all ages

What we would like to do now is to extend further this conversation in the context of the Conference. So, we are organising a series of co-creation events in the next few months. In this new phase we will focus on youth visions of future Beautiful, Sustainable, Inclusive places. Although we are talking about the future, we would like to focus on tangible future experiences. And to do so, we thought to ask you to have a conversation at home with your children, grandchildren and your younger relatives, with these questions in mind.

• Where would they like to live when they grow up? What would their favourite places look like? Would there be any animals, or plants?


• If they had to imagine the perfect school of the future, how would it look like? What would they learn? How would they play?


• What do they want to be when they grow up? What would a day at work look like? Where would be their office? Would they have an office?

At the events, we will be discussing these questions and go deeper on your ideas. Ideally, we would like to have you and the youngster with whom you talked to at the event. We will be conducting the co-creation activity, online with a bit of materiality. So, please bring paper and pens and building blocks such as Lego to help with sparking our imagination together in these 3 hour co-creation events. More details will be given when you register, but we promise some creative setting!

The contributions that we gather through these events will be published here so that others can give their opinion, expand them with any concreteness they might consider, or simply imagining new ideas for their own towns. All this work will be used to reinforce the narrative around the New European Bauhaus and a selection of the contributions could become part of the official communication about the New European Bauhaus.

The first event on 9 July at 10.00 AM CEST will be in English language, but more events will be organised in other EU official languages.
