Circular economy, change in consumption habits

Circular economy is a great way to achieve sustainable goals set by the Eu and the UN. Our consumption system needs to be changed, but the way people consume goods too.Europeans need to be more aware about it. Education is key. Schools curricula could help having a more responsible consumption. Older people should also have access to this information through ads for instance. The national governments with the help of the EU should be able to set up “taxes” or “rewards” as in Sweden or Denmark to encourage/encourage citizens to recycle. it was in fact so effective that Sweden has to import waste!

    Climate change: causes and solutions?
  • datetime
  • 27 May 2021
    17:00 - 18:30
Why should we start looking for climate change? And why is this a different problem than nature conservation? What part of the blame for the current situation is the overcrowding of the planet or the Asian industry? Is it warned of the current unsustainable economy by many experts and politicians what the world they offer? And is there anything like green or sustainable economic growth? These and other issues related to climate change will be addressed by Martin Madei, analyst of the Association for International Affairs. The debate will be launched by the European Sustainability Week, which will take place from 30 May to 5 June.
Clean and resilient cities and a social economy for a green and just transition
  • datetime
  • 12 October 2021
    16:30 - 18:00
The pandemic has highlighted the inextricable link between human and environmental health, and the capacity of both solidarity and nature to strengthen the resilience of urban communities. This session will underline that a green and a just transition need to go hand in hand and explore how the social economy can help ensure that no one is left behind. The workshop discussions will be inspired by two keynote presentations on the general role of cities and regions in a green and just transition, illustrated by the example of Gdynia. Further evidence will be provided through five short video inputs featuring local and regional authorities that developed environmental and social solutions to put the post-COVID-19 pandemic recovery on to a sustainable track. Looking from a different angle, the session will also explore how initiatives such as the Green City Accord, the Resilient Cities Network and the European Network of Social Integration Enterprises can strengthen the political will and the capacity of key actors to protect and enhance the urban environment in collaboration with citizens and other stakeholders. The aim of doing so is to mitigate future risks and increase the preparedness of communities vis-à-vis global threats and disasters, without leaving anyone behind.
Debate: Green tourism for Europe’s future
  • datetime
  • 14 June 2021
    18:00 - 19:00
Promoting green and sustainable tourism is part of the EU’s commitment to building a sustainable economy based on the European Green Deal. Innovative projects implemented across Europe show how responsible and green tourism can support the recovery of the European economy after the COVID-19 pandemic. This is particularly important in less visited but culturally rich destinations across Europe. At the same time, it must be borne in mind that the benefits of tourism must be balanced with environmental protection, as tourism has a serious impact not only on natural and cultural resources but also on the local population. Therefore, the EU’s continued support and commitment to the protection of natural areas is more important than ever. As part of EUROPE DIRECT Podravje, PIP organises a debate on the development of sustainable tourism and its impact on the environment, thereby opening a local dialogue on the future of Europe. The event is a unique opportunity for all people, organisations and businesses in the region to gain more insight into the topics of green tourism, share knowledge and discuss the challenges you face in your local context. Panelists: Jerneja South JERŠE, Head of the European Commission Representation in Slovenia; Andrejbach, Director of Ormož Public Institute for Tourism, Culture and Sport; Danijel VRBNJAK, Professor of Science, Mayor of the Municipality of Ormož and – Ksenija FLEGAR, acting Director-General of the Directorate for Tourism at MGRT. Slovenia is the land of an unspoilt green nature, which encourages us to act responsibly, protect and preserve natural and cultural treasures. As we want to have our green country, we invite you to join us in the debate on how to harness the potential of sustainable tourism to create a healthy and competitive Europe and to help shape its future. Together, build green policies and green experiences.

Innovative cross-border cooperation responses to climate change
  • datetime
  • 03 November 2021
    10:00 - 13:00
Climate change is humanity’s main challenge and its serious impact on the Spanish-Portuguese border is becoming more than evident. In recent years, efforts to combat climate change have focused mainly on replacing fossil energy sources with renewable energy, and on promoting energy efficiency, however, although progress must continue in this direction, the climate emergency and the speed with which less favourable scenarios are being reached show us that this is not enough. The Castile-Leon border with Portugal is one of the most vulnerable areas to climate change in our region, as demonstrated by the climate scenarios designed, which will have consequences on economic activities (agricultural and forestry sector, tourism, etc.) on health, biodiversity and the frequency and intensity of extreme events such as droughts or forest fires. This leads us to consider the need for the importance of cross-border cooperation to articulate a coordinated and innovative response to climate change, to increase the resilience of the border territory, while at the same time serving as a reference at European level on the importance of cooperation and joint action to tackle climate change. The innovative approach obliges us to go beyond energy-related actions and address new tools, based on the ambition of climate objectives. The first innovative response is to address a new model of production and consumption, based on a circular, regenerative economy, in the light of the fact that, even if we were able to completely transform our energy and transport model into clean energy, more than 45 % of our CO2 emissions are caused by the production and consumption of goods and food. The second innovative response is to bring adaptation to climate change to the front line of joint action in the light of the evidence that its consequences are manifesting in an accelerated manner, much faster than the forecasts of the different scenarios had anticipated. Meeting 1: “The circular economy as a response to climate change”. Table-Debate: To reflect on the answers needed to make our production and consumption model a low-carbon model throughout the product lifecycle and in the development of new business models. Meeting 2: “Adaptation to climate change: increase the resilience of the border territory”. Table-Debate: To reflect on the need to develop climate adaptation and resilience plans for the economic activities and cities of the border territory, the protection of health and economic activities. Presentation of Good Practices: Exhibition on the web www.espaciofronteira.eu and during the meetings, of the main projects (best practice) of cross-border cooperation* developed in recent years, related to climate change and the circular economy, highlighting the results obtained and lessons learned to promote their replicability. It is accompanied by a social media outreach plan for each of the projects identified. *Both the meeting and the projects on which good practices are presented have been co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) within the framework of the INTERREG V-A Spain-Portugal Operational Programme (2014-2020).

    Circular economy and waste reduction
  • datetime
  • 12 May 2021
    16:45 - 19:00
In line with the 2050 climate targets to which the EU committed itself under the European Green Deal, the European Commission proposed a new Circular Economy Action Plan in March 2020. It focuses on waste prevention and management and aims to promote the EU’s growth, competitiveness and global leadership. If we continue to use resources in the same way as we have done so far, we would need at least three planets of the Earth by 2050. Finite resources and climate challenges require us to move towards a carbon-neutral, environmentally sustainable, non-toxic and fully circular economy by 2050. At the same time, the current crisis, which has hit SMEs and industry in particular, has highlighted weaknesses in value and source chains. The circular economy will reduce CO2 emissions while stimulating economic growth and creating jobs. In order to achieve a fully circular economy, sustainability needs to be mainstreamed at all stages of the value chain: from design to production to the road to the consumer. What are the views of South Bohemia students on circular economy issues? We will tell them about this during the debate on the Conference on the Future of Europe!

It will be assisted by a representation of society as a whole from both Autonomous Communities and all their branches, with the aim of achieving the broader perspective of the public and private positions of both regions on the future of Europe in ecological matters (Energy and Sustainability). The Merida event will specifically address the energy transition.

    Europa-Abend in Berlin-Weissensee
  • datetime
  • 13 November 2021
    17:00 - 19:00
The European evening in Berlin-Weissensee is a privately organised event. The discussion will be held on various evenings in private rooms under Corona-2G conditions. The topics on the first evening: “Climate change — worries, ideas, changes” and “The EU in the world”
S I T Z U N G S B E R I C H T There were 13 persons, including 11 men and 2 women. The age of the participants was between 23 and 76, mainly between 50 and 60 years. Professionally, there was a range of students to therapist, engineer, administrative staff to pensioners. The motivation to participate generally stemmed from the interest in a functioning European Union. The meeting started at 7 p.m. and ended at 9 p.m. During this period, 2 different topics were dealt with. Theme 1: Climate change and the environment The continued use of nuclear power for energy production was discussed, but mostly not accepted. Instead, it was suggested that the EU should organise a single European energy policy. The consensus was that a fundamental change of values in our society must take place in order to combat climate change. In detail, this means that we need to learn a new culture of renunciation. Renunciation is a value in itself. That is why the constant growth of the economy has also been called into question. Growth should be redefined. For example, growth can also be achieved by concentrating on higher quality rather than on greater quantity of products. In this context, it was proposed that the EU’s economy should be more regulated in general, especially with regard to climate change. This regulation should take place right up to climate-friendly pricing and generally focus on better fairness in European societies. The following ideas were formulated: Idea 1: As an important measure against climate change, the EU aims to redefine the growth of the economy. A general renunciation of more and more goods must play a role here. In the production of goods, quality should therefore take precedence over quantity. Idea 2: The EU should be responsible for a holistic European energy policy. Theme 2: The EU in the world was discussed on the future role of the EU in the world. 1. It was important to the participants that the EU should take responsibility in the world for the maintenance of life (climate-friendly and resource-saving policies) on this planet. 2. The EU should become a lighthouse in the world for dealing with differences. It was important that the EU, in its view of the world, respects and treats the diversity and diversity of cultures just as it respects and promotes the different cultures within the EU.
