EU Democracy as GAME in the CLASSROOM; empowering junior citizens to participate in the democratic life of the Union
Article 10 of the Treaty on European Union grants each citizen the right to participate in the democratic life of the Union. As European democracy is still young, it needs to be nurtured and taught. So, if the EU aspires to become a living democracy, it has to prepare and empower junior citizens as part of their school curriculum to become active citizens of the Union.
In line with article 10 TEU, my idea is to familiarise junior citizens with the concept of EU democracy by means of a EUROPEAN DEMOCRACY GAME. The rules of the board game EUROCRACY are entirely based on the 2007 Lisbon Treaty. A pilot project, which I am conducting of my own accord as EU citizen, reveals that students find the game both visionary and fun (see picture).
Playing in groups of six, participants assume the role of leaders of European political parties (Spitzenkandidaten). They embark on an election campaign through the entire EU. By winning municipal elections in the cities of the 27 Member States, depicted on the board, they gain Members of the European Parliament. They have to face challenges, win entire countries and conclude deals before they are home and dry. The winner is proclaimed EU PRESIDENT. Each Junior EU President delivers an inaugural address and starts the debate about the Future of Europe in the classroom. The game gets an extra educational dimension, when it is played with junior citizens from various nationalities as part of Erasmus school & students exchanges!
