Sounds good
A very good idea, although perhaps not in all fields of work. Something like retail or transport, where something close to a 24/7 service needs to be provided, or that already operates work shifts, is a natural fit for short individual working weeks. Necessary but non-creative jobs like maybe accounting or human resources could well be able to work more efficiently if they had a shorter working week, so there would be little loss of real work done. But there are also creative fields such as research or software development, where efficiency comes from interest in the field (unless bullied by company management) and giving up a day of work would actually slow down progress.
Perhaps supporting working from home for part of the week for such jobs where possible can be an option to a 4-day work week; it eliminates life-draining commuting and can be quite refreshing for some people.

Take the question: How long want we to grow economy? Is it good for people to grow economy forever? Why do we chase chase this model? We "need" more and more, and than we realize we are slaves in the system which we believed and vitalized. If there is no growing, is that means regression? Definitely not! What happensif we make a ceiling and after achieve that level we keep it stable? I think the mankind absolutely lost the right direction, our identity, the real, happy and wealthy side of the world. To me less work means more freetime, more creativity, less stress, more well being, time for my family, for self development, to think more enviromentally friendly. There are hundred of idea in this site which are related to this. The human lifetime and energy are finite. We can say the same to our planet. Why would we increase our economic cake more if the oven has fixed volume?
The home office is just a half solution: I has realised (during this pandemic) in my macro ambience that after a while people start to work more than before, because the line between private area and work starts to fading.
It's urgently needed, together with universal basic income, in order to redistribute work and income.

How do you intended to enforce this? what about the people working 6 days? what about essential work. where will the employees come from? do you realize this is a restriction of freedom?
If you want to work 5 days because you need the money you should be able to, and encouraged to do so.
Citizens are not children that need handholding. The EU should not restrict freedom and let it's citizens choose how much they want to work.5, 4, or 0 days. up to you.

It is about freedom, to be the 4 days a week a standard for the same money, you can altogether choose to work for more days if you want, it is up to you(where I live you already do not gain more income with more workdays). BUT, it is a fact that in a lot of positions it can be profitable, e.g. as mentioned above, tourism, average mental health among people, thus every sector would profit from it. It would be no loss of any freedom, even a gain for more free time if you choose to.
Why should the EU be involved in micromanaging the agreements made in the free labour market?
Where I come from, the worker unions and branch organizations (employers) make the decisions and agreements about these matters, amongst themselves. This what is called the Nordic Model, where I come from. It is academically known as Liberal corporatism.
If a union of workers, an employer, or any other individual or organization wants the work hours to be in any particular way that they'd like them, I think they should agree on that amongst themselves. This is not in the jurisdiction or area of responsibility of the EU or any government at all.

The problem is that if you work less time, you will earn less, because if your boss wants to continue producing the same, he will need to hire more people but he/she won't get more money.

One can work for 40 hours in 4 days. But why would you measure work by time?
How about max 36 minutes of work (12 x 3 min), with 1 minute rest period after each round? Manual workers like professional boxers might appreciate this kind of labor laws.
Sailors in oil tankers or nuclear submarines, on the other hand, might prefer longer working weeks. It could take more than 4 days to bring a ship from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean.
Flexible working arrangements are the keys to get the job done at the right time.
Studien haben gezeigt, dass Menschen, die nur vier statt fünf Tage arbeiten, in der kürzeren Zeit nicht weniger produktiv sind. Einen Tag länger zu arbeiten ist also die Verschwendung kostbarer Lebenszeit.
Wegen der Digitalisierung wird es in Zukunft weniger Arbeit geben. Wir müssen daher unser Konzept von bezahlter Arbeit sowieso grundlegend überdenken.
Und wem seine Arbeit wirklich Spaß macht, der darf gerne auch länger arbeiten.

L'expérience française du début des années 2000 de la mise en place des 35 heures sans perte de salaire a été catastrophique pour l'économie de ce pays qui a vu :
- l'effondrement de son industrie qui ne pèse plus que 10 % au lieu de 20 % au début du siècle,
- la forte augmentation des prélèvements sociaux nécessaires au maintien du niveau de vie : en effet, le chômage a explosé,
- la très forte augmentation du déficit de la balance commerciale et de la balance des paiements : la France importe beaucoup plus qu'elle n'exporte, les plans de relance successifs étant concentrés sur la seule consommation.
- la France est devenue un pays "détenu" : sa dette, énorme mais nécessaire pour maintenir à flots le pays, st détenue par l'étranger.
Ce serait paradoxalement une bonne nouvelle que tous les pays européens s'y mettent. Nous serions égaux dans la misère, pour le plus grand bénéfice de la Chine, des Etats Unis, etc..
Bien sur cela amène aussi le populisme.

Très intéressant commentaire, très instructif, un peu suffisant peut-être, vraiment cela fait plaisir de retourner à l'école, mais je ne suis pas concerné. Les 35 heures payées 39 ont été une catastrophe. Tout le monde peut le comprendre. Je ne suis pas opposé aux 32 heures payées 32.
