A new EU economic model and governance is needed, to be based on going ‘beyond GDP’ and building an inclusive and fair ‘European well-being’. A reform of the EU economic governance, the European Semester, the mandate of the ECB, EU own-resources and to strengthen the EMU is urgent in order to ensure that social justice goes hand-in-hand with economic competitiveness and that people’s well-being is the objective of economic policies.

Reshaping the EU Fiscal Framework for a Sustainable Recovery and a Just Transition

Both a sustainable economic and social recovery from the COVID-19 crisis and the need to address effectively the climate change will require a massive expansion of investments. To achieve this, reshaping the EU fiscal rules is indispensable. Against this background, the Section for Economic and Monetary Union and Economic and Social Cohesion (ECO) of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is currently working on an own-initiative opinion on Reshaping the EU Fiscal Framework for a Sustainable Recovery and a Just Transition.
In the framework of the work on this opinion, the ECO section decided to organise a hearing on Friday, 10 September 2021, from 10:00, bringing together experts from organised civil society, academia as well as decision-makers to discuss how the new economic governance framework should be shaped to ensure that fiscal policies target both long-term sustainability and short-term stabilisation. The EESC intends to use the findings and conclusions of the event to feed into the EESC own-initiative opinion.

S-Com within the WISE4Challenges project carried out a series of interviews with female MEPs and a questionnaire on the topic of the Recovery and Resilience Facility. The RRF was created to repair the damage created by the Covid-19 pandemic but also aims to help Member States reduce social inequalities. During the debate we will see how the 3 countries involved in the project (IT-BE-SP) are responding.
