I believe France should coordinate its positions on the UN Security Council with the EU and EEAS or handle their seat to the EU in its entirety.

I agree in principle to having France being flanked by the EU in the Security Council, which at best should however be reformed (difficult to say why the European Union should have a veto right; better to have a gradual transition to votes with super-majorities in the Security Council). This would of course require two steps. First, France should acknowledge a sharing of sovereignty within the EU27. Second, the EU should abolished its own internal veto system, otherwise it would not be able to take any position internationally.
Why shouldn't the EU have a veto right ? Would it be less legitimized as any of the four others vetos ? I am not sure to understand, could you elaborate on that ?
Otherwise, yes absolutely, if the EU is to have such a power on the international scene, it would need a more coherent system for external policy decision-making !
Dear Alice, my point is that we need a reform of the Security Council withdrawing the veto power from the permanent members. The EU should, in my view, plea for a more democratic UN.
Oh ok, so no veto rights at all ? All the decisions in the security council to be taken with a majority principle ?
I would propose the UN should broaden membership of the Security Council and vote by QMV.
In fact, there are two very different issues:
1. an agreement between France and EU in order to appoint one common/unique representation at the security council. This can be done short term in case of EU council agreement because it does not request modification of UN rules, does not request UN approval and yes, the representative would keep the veto right just like US, Russia, China, UK. More sensitive for other EU member states: to be consistent, they should put their own representations in vacancy, or at the service of the common representation. A little revolution in old-fashioned diplomacy...
2. Abandon veto right for all. Good idea indeed, but this is another story and longer term because it request a modification of UN rules (and agreement from US, China, Russia etc.)
