Let's be honest the EU is never going to work, different languages, cultures and histories. History has shown these superstates never work out, we're already seeing massive opposition to it. The superstates leaders constantly have to intervene to hold it together until its inevitable collapse.

The actual structure and competence of the EU is dysfunctional. But back to the past is and never was a sufficient solution to meet the challenges of the present and the future. We have to do the next steps. They have to be bold, not frightened by the tasks ahead.
What was wrong with before? The EU worked as the EEC, according as its gotten more political Europe has gone to hell, I think you're falling for the myth the EU propagates that there is no alternative to try legitimise itself. The more it pushes for integration the more the wheels come off. It was always an impossible task to try federalist Europe. What annoys me is if you speak out about this, something that's never been done before in federalising Europe, you're labelled nationalist or populist, pure snake oil.

Expansion by many dissimilar members and in particular the implementation of the EURO has made the EU unmanageable.
The EURO is too strong for the less competitive members and is therefore unsustainable.
These members should improve their competitiveness. Or else the EU will be following the route of the USSR, ( and most Communist nations ) who after 70 years trying to built a social paradise ended in poverty and suppression.
The solution: we have to go back to the EEC, which was a COOPERATION, and was successful.
Then the identity and way of life of each member can be respected.
For the EURO alternatives have to be found.
The reference to Communism and soviet union is just weird.
The Soviet Union ( and most Communist countries) wanted to built an integral state, based on a Marxist blueprint. All power centralized.
To an extend the EU is doing the same. Gorbachov was also surprised by these European politics. I agree with you that is weird.
The driving force behind this is the unlimited hunger for power and status by the Europhile elite. In particular in Paris and Brussels. They talk about becoming more powerful compared to other countries in the World. They very seldom talk about achieving results to the benefit of the EU people. Think of the External Borders, the Euro.
The EU has budgetary power and legislative power. Its budget is less than 1.23% of the GDP. Its legislative powers are subject to veto from any member state, or majority voting.
In my view, the EU is highly decentralized union, with 24 official languages, 27 military forces, and 450 million people with dual-citizenship.
The Euro was introduced too fast and too widely, despite the warnings that the candidate countries are not meeting the convergence criteria. It was a political decision… in Greece and other countries to go ahead no matter what (hook and crook is needed). They paid a heavy price. We all are still paying for it.
The subsidiarity principle seems to get forgotten every now and then. It is the individual citizen who should be on the driver’s seat most of the time - not the EU mandarins.
The statement is a respectable opinion, however it is not "honest" in the sense that it is the only possible view. Europeans share a lot: The insight that all human beings are born free and equal in rights, the idea of democracy, a long, common history of over 2000 years, and last not least common interests due to the geographical position and closeness. Europe has become our home space for living and economic activity. Different languages and a variety of cultures are not an obstacle for common political decision making. This is a matter of will and we have to find the right instutional architecture for it. However, the current EU is not the appropriate one.
Defeatists should remain silent.

Let's go forward and make the EU the shared home that we all want to live in, that can lead the world in dealing with the problems we face on our planet. We can have a strong federal Europe that will protect the rights of individuals and communities, that will have the power to tackle the climate emergency and stand up to other superpowers. The British people were afraid of losing their identity but in fact it was the EU that funded the Welsh language, our identities are not threatened by the EU but the failure to come together to deal with the problems facing humanity means we would all be at risk.
Anne. What you describe is a dream. One I share. The question is however is how to realise it.
Up to 20 years ago the EU was a promising and dynamic venture. It has since become stagnant. Causes are: the introduction of the Euro, the reckless expansion with new members, unlimited bureaucratic expansion ( the ever closer Union ), Isolation from the citizen.
The EEC had already most of the benefits the EU has now. But, without the EURO, the members could keep their sovereignity.
Evidence: Failure to stop the mass immigration, Declining economic growth, The gap between Brussels and the citizen. Unchecked power grab in Brussels.
If that dream, that we both share, have to come true some structural changes are needed in the EU.
We can make it work with imagination, trying and experimenting new democratic frameworks like non partisan democracies instead falling for the old and damaging ideas of Federalism or Republic, these would only accelerate the EU disintegration.
It took awhile and a civil war etc. to build the US. When did Alaska join it?
India has much more cultural and linguistic diversity than the EU, but somehow the world’s largest democracy keeps going and getting along with its nuclear neighbors.
China has also gone a long way since the warring nations era. It took a couple of thousands years.
Those who long for EEC times, EEA is the alternative. Join Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein in the European Economic Area.
The EU is not as decentralized as you describe. France and Germany comprise only 31 % ( 15 + 19) of the EU population. Their leaders determine the future, and 69 % of the people have no vote. There are veto rights, but they are not supposed to be used. Going back to the EEC would mean to me:
- that the EURO be split up or restructured, because it strangles the non-competitive members. ( noble prize laureates Milton Friedman and Joseph Stiglitz warned correctly for this a long time ago)
- the mass immigration has spinned out of control. Crime is exploding, etnic gangs, drugcartels, terrorists. In Northern EU cities over 50 % are immigrants from more than 150 countries. They undermine cohesion and increase poverty.
Immigration is entirely a responsiblity of the EU. They are too naive and weak to protect the EU citizen and the European way of life. Mass-Immigration is a bigger threat to Europe than climate.
