Strategic Autonomy

The European Union should become an autonomous entity on the world stage. It should absolutely develop the capabilities to defend its self and its interest if required.
The modern world, wether we like it or not, is still a battleground of competing ideas. Theocracies, Political Islam, Communism, Authoritarianism & Totalitarianism are competing for influence in the world, all of which are fundamentally at odds with our core values.
The European mind in the 17th/ 18th century generated the enlightenment, which was the encapsulation of the fundamental values of prosperity & progress.
Similarly, the modern European mind through (so much) trial and (so much) error managed generate our Union. Our values & ideas can become a beacon to humanity, to history, once again.
It’s our duty.

SUMMER COURSE "EUROPEAN UNION-LATIN AMERICA AND CARIBBEAN RELATIONS: A RENEWED AGENDA AND A RECOVERY AGENDA UNDER THE SDGS”
19 July 2021
16:00 - 20:00
This course will be organised in collaboration with the EU-LAC Foundation within the framework of the collaboration agreement between the two entities. It will be supported by the Ibero-American General Secretariat, and the active participation of its General Secretary, and Member of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste, Rebeca Grynspan, and the collaboration of the Euro-America Foundation, represented by its President, and also a Member of the Yuste Academy, Ramón Jáuregui. The course aims to continue the Foundation’s line of work on education for development by raising specific themes within the framework of Agenda 2030. The main objective of these courses is to address the challenges faced at the global level for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), contributing from the formation, reflection, debate and transfer of knowledge, to a greater study and improvement of the implementation of strategies that contribute to the construction of peaceful, solidarity and egalitarian societies. In particular, SDG 16 states that without peace, stability, human rights and effective governance based on the rule of law, sustainable development cannot be achieved, although other SDGs will also be addressed, such as 17, aimed at fostering partnerships to achieve the remaining objectives, and, in particular, those SDGs that are linked to the current situation of uncertainty that is experiencing Ibero-America, such as Goal 10 for reducing inequalities, Goal 8 on Decent Work and Economic Growth, which has become a goal of health, the objective of which is to eradicate poverty in Latin America, as well as goal 10 for reducing inequalities, Goal 8 on Decent Work and Economic Growth, the goal of which is the goal of poverty, the goal of which is to eradicate poverty in Latin America. Before the pandemic, Latin America and the Caribbean had its lowest period of economic growth in the last seven decades after years of high economic growth. The Covid-19 health emergency has only exacerbated this situation by increasing extreme poverty to figures unknown in the last decade. According to data provided by ECLAC, the figures for the effects of the pandemic in Latin America and the Caribbean are alarming: The number of people in extreme poverty has increased by 78 million, by more than 209 million people who have become poor, and by about 35 million people who have lost their jobs in Latin America. In addition, the health crisis has particularly affected the gender of women, leading to a decline of more than 10 years in the situation of women in terms of gender equality and loss of opportunities and access to the labour market. There are also great inequalities and a strong dependence on the outside at the health level (i.e. in access to anti-covid measures or vaccines), a low internet access that also has high costs, and climate change is having significant effects in the region. In addition, funding is lacking to deal with this crisis. It is therefore necessary to rethink social protection systems and return to universality, promote digitalisation as an element of inclusion, find green and sustainable engines for growth, and improve governance by promoting a new social pact. This situation leads to occasional scenarios of political and social uncertainty in some countries of the region. Historical experience at the global level has illustrated that economic and social crises have political consequences. In this sense, the preservation of democratic governance and the protection of access to services in equal opportunities, as well as inclusion policies seem to be central at the moment. This course will seek to analyse the current situation and seek responses within the framework of Agenda 2030 and the SDGs as a framework for socio-economic co-development, in order to respond to the challenges facing the region. Possible options for working on a programme for the recovery of Latin America, within the framework of the SDGs, will be explored, and the development of a renewed agenda in European Union relations Latin America and the Caribbean that will help address these common challenges, taking into account the return to multilateralism, and the development of initiatives linked to climate change and digital development as possible valid instruments for the management of global problems valid for the relationship between Europe and Latin America and the Caribbean will be explored. The course will take place in 5 sessions of 3 and a half hours each in which we will have one or two main speakers each day, and a panel made up of actors of the relationship as an input that can give rise to debate and reflection with the participating students.

European Strategic Autonomy
25 June 2021
09:30 - 13:00
There are growing calls for the European Union (EU) to be more autonomous and independent while remaining open to other economies and committed to upholding multilateralism. This is often referred to as Strategic Autonomy. But what does it mean exactly? Which areas of EU policymaking does it affect? Should the EU really pursue Strategic Autonomy?
These questions will guide Club de Madrid's upcoming debate in the framework of the Conference on the Future of Europe. The largest forum of former Presidents and Prime Ministers organizes this high-level dialogue with the support of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, and with the participation of the Government of Portugal and the civil society organizations, Equipo Europa, and the European think tank, Friends of Europe.

On December 22, at 13:00, everyone is invited to a remote discussion on "The EU — a global power in the world of the future: a Federation or an Economic Union?’. During the debate, we will talk to our guests about the European Union — what is the EU’s role in the world of the future? Is there/no global power in the EU today? Will the EU retain its political weight on the international stage? Can and how can the EU address international geopolitical challenges and conflicts? And finally, what should the EU itself be — a closer federation or a broader economic union of states (or maybe something between them?) to maintain (create) its position as a global power? We will try to find an answer to these and other questions together with our guests: Lecturer of VMU Associate Dr. Andzej Pukszt ÚLR Seimas, Member of the European Affairs Committee Matas Maldeikis Former Minister of National Defence, former Ambassador of Lithuania and Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the European Union Raimondas Karoblis Discussion moderated by APK Chairman Povilas Mikalauskas The discussion will take place remotely on MS Teams platform (link to be presented later), at the end of the discussion there will be an opportunity to ask questions on a topic related to the preleagers
