Digital Sovereignty for Europe
"Can Europe be a global leader in the digital sector?"
The coronavirus crisis showed us that the digital field is more significant than ever in our society. The pandemic has further accelerated the quest to lead digitalization.
This digital quest also takes place on the European level. The European leaders themselves expressed their desire to develop European abilities in the digital area, for instance, stating Europe must achieve “technological sovereignty” in critical areas or claiming Europe must preserve “digital sovereignty” to reduce its dependence on U.S. tech giants.
But what is digital sovereignty? Can we talk about it on a European level? In other words, can we describe the EU as a leader in the digital sector?
Our guest speakers, Diego Naranjo head of policy at European Digital Rights (EDRi), and Andrew Puddephatt, international expert on data protection, founder of Adapt, among others, and CEO of Cedar Partners, will respond to these key questions.
Event report
Stand Up for Europe hosted a conversation about Digital Sovereignty for Europe. It focused particularly on this aspect in its latest online roundtable session with an international expert on data Andrew Puddephatt OBE, the CEO of Cedar Partners and founder of the company Adapt, and chair at Internet Watch Foundation, and a professional lawyer and European Digital Rights (EDRi) Head of Policy Diego Naranjo, who defends rights and freedoms in the digital environment across Europe. Since digital sovereignty is a rather new phenomenon without a generally accepted definition, the experts were also asked to help to catch the essence of the concept. It was a one-hour zoom webinar that gave us new perspectives and insights into our virtual realities.Related Ideas
