Report of the event “Comunicar Ciência: várias áreas, diferentes contributos” The event “Comunicar Ciência: várias áreas, diferentes contributos” took place on the 12th of February of 2022, online via Microsoft Teams. It was organized by three PhD candidates ( Andreia Oliveira, Bruno Fonseca e Mariana Velho ), in collaboration with Europe Direct Açores. The event started at 10h30 (GMT) and ended at 13h30 (GMT). There were 101 applications for participation. Data on age, sex and profession was not collected. In the event there were 22 participants. The event aimed at discussing three topics: Climate Change, Data Access and Science Communication. The panel of speakers was composed by Alice Fonseca, Daniela António, Diogo Nogueira Leite and Francisco Guerreiro (MEP). Climate Change The first session, on Climate Change, was conducted by Alice Fonseca and Francisco Guerreiro. The session covered topics such as transparency in the communication of information about climate change, and how the finance sector will be affected and should adapt to the forthcoming challenges. One remark was the discussion regarding the fact that we are already in the mitigation phase and not discussing only prevention towards the expected consequences. The discussion also covered the access to resources in different communities, and how community bounds could be created in a bottom up action. Moreover, in the Portuguese context, it was mentioned that the issue is not the negation of climate change, but the challenges in the communication of an action plan. One final remark to leave of this session is the how the communication of what we do to others is important to involve society as a whole in the discussion of this type of problem Data Access The second session was conducted by Diogo Nogueira Leite regarding Data Access. The session began with the presentation of a scenario to reflect on the use of Data. It was discussed what is considered public data, and on what constitutes the access to such data. Following this case study, the discussion also approached the management of data in climate change, in extension to the previous session, and the use of data in the case of information sharing related to SARS-COV-2. It was also mentioned the importance of understanding the meaning of data, what it refers to and the underlying processes, which are not often communicated clearly. The discussion then moved to the topic of Open Access and Open Science, its potential and current caveats. One participant highlighted the importance of databases for the scientific community, and the long way to transpose them to society. Science Communication The third session was conducted by Daniela António regarding Science Communication. This session was focused on the process of communicating science, as a scientific field, but as well as regarding its application. The discussion surrounded the tactics of communication, and how from one to another there can be loss of information and what consequences it entails. Another interesting remark was the consideration of paternalism in science towards society. It was also discussed how it differentiated information from knowledge, and the consequences of them being often confused as the same concept. Moreover, it was briefly discussed the implications of paid versus unpaid content. Plenary Session The last session consisted of a round table with all speakers and the organizers. In this session, the same questions were proposed to all speakers, regarding the main challenges in communicating science and how a platform to promote networking between different fields could be a good asset. From these questions, we can remark some conclusions: it is important to place the citizen in a participatory science approach and reach the society; the importance of open science; and the reformulation of scientific institutions. Lastly, if was agreed on the beneficial impact that having an open dialogue between fields and expertises can have in science communication. The importance of building a network as this project intends, is to formulate a triangle of knowledge. In other words, a point of social convergence, where a small fringe of society can be more active in sharing information and strengthening dialogue, in a common space. The platform will embody that common ground, where society will constitute, simultaneously as the scientific and technical component. A feedback form was sent to the enrolled and participants. The form was divided into two aim groups: the enrolled ones who did not participate, where we collected information regarding the reasons for not being present - the main reason reported was the day of the week; and to the enrolled ones who did participate, feedback and suggestions regarding the session was collected - the main critic was the difficulty in the management of the online platform. The most mentioned positive feature was the choice of topics. We intend to facilitate more workshops in the upcoming months, as well as contributions in other digital formats, to consolidate the foundations of the networking platform.
