The recent "sofagate" is just the last example of the weakness of European institutions on the geopolitical stage. Having so many presidents with overlapping competencies and indirect democratic legitimacy creates confusion among EU citizens, and it is easily exploited by our global competitors. Moreover, accusations of democratic deficit have contributed for a long time to weaken and undermine the legitimacy of the union. So I propose to merge the roles of President of the Commission and of President of the European Council into a single one, and to elect it directly in European wide elections, according to the same electoral law, and with mechanisms that ensure citizens of small nations are not disadvantaged in their chances to get elected. I believe this would be a huge step in European integration, which would contribute in creating a true continental demos in a way that hasn't really happened so far.

    L’evento si inquadra tra le iniziative di sensibilizzazione e coinvolgimento che la Commissione Europea sta conducendo sui territori in concomitanza dei lavori della Conferenza sul futuro dell’Europa, (COFE). Avremmo piacere di poter ospitare il suo intervento per dibattere con i giovani che sono già stati preparati dai loro docenti sulle tematiche prioritarie alla base della COFE per il futuro dell’Europa. L’incontro si svolgerà presso l’aula magna del Liceo Mazzini di Locri il 22 Marzo pv. e prevede una modalità mista, in presenza dei giovani e di parte dei relatori e dei rappresentanti delle istituzioni locali. I lavori seguiranno la seguente organizzazione: Vi sarà l’opportunità per gli studenti di presentare una propria proposta su una delle tematiche su cui l’Europa sta dibattendo anche sotto la forma di emendamento a un Trattato o alla legislazione UE. Il contributo sarà inserito nella piattaforma multilingue della UE e sarà considerato dalle istituzioni comunitarie per disegnare l’Europa dei cittadini del futuro. Programma Ore 10.00/11.30 Dibattito con i giovani Incontro/dibattito politico-istituzionale di circa un’ora e mezza sui temi della Conferenza sul futuro dell’Europa, anche in relazione alle specificità e sollecitazioni del territorio. L’incontro è aperto alla partecipazione dei giovani, degli studenti dell’ente ospitante, a quelli di altre Università o Istituti di alta formazione, nonché alla società civile e agli stakeholder. L’incontro avrà come obiettivo, dopo breve introduzione di rappresentanti di Europe Direct e autorità locali, la presentazione da parte di giovani di idee e proposte, anche in forma di emendamenti a Trattato e/o legislazione UE, sui temi della COFE da inserire nella piattaforma digitale multilingue. L’incontro sarà moderato da un giornalista di una media locale che dovrebbe assicurare anche la copertura dell’evento.
