Giving the European Parliament the right of legislative initiative

Although the European Parliament now has important powers, it does not yet have a formal right of legislative initiative. It is true that the Commission’s proposals are the result of numerous interactions with the European Parliament and the Member States. However, as Parliament is the only European insitution whose members are directly elected by direct universal suffrage, granting this right to MEPs would further strengthen their legitimacy & would strengthen the link between citizens and the EU.

On September 28 starting at 16.00 appointment at the Humanitarian Sardinia in viale Trieste 126 with a Caffè Europa in which Roger Casale, former parliamentarian of the United Kingdom Roger and currently president of the association New Europeans, Christian Rossi, professor of History of European Integration at the University of Cagliari and Valerio Giannellini, vice president of the Fondazione Rossi Salvemini, will talk about the “Conference on the future of Europe and the role of citizens for the future of the EU”. On September 29, also at the Humanitarian Sardinia starting at 4 p.m., it will be possible to attend the screening of the documentary film “Le parole di Ventotene” that traces Ernesto Rossi’s fundamental contribution to the elaboration of the united Europe project contained in the Ventotene Manifesto, of which he co-authored with Altiero Spinelli. Followed by dialogue with Elisa Mereghetti, who directed the film together with Marco Cavallarin and Marco Mensa. Ernesto Rossi’s passion for puppet theatre is little known; he himself had built some of them and had staged some street shows in Bologna and Florence in the years of his youth. This passion of Ernesto Rossi has become in recent years the inspiration for the work of the Sarzi family, puppet makers for six generations, who have revived Rossi’s puppets in Sardinian schools. The videos "Welcome to the world of puppets" will be screened by the Comprehensive Institute "Randaccio Tuveri Don Milani" of Cagliari and "Project Europe: Ernesto Rossi’s puppets teach Europe" realised as part of the activities with the primary school "I Pini" of Cagliari. To participate you must exhibit the Green Pass. There are currently no places available. The work is part of the activities of the Conference for the Future of Europe, of which Europe Direct Region Sardinia is a meeting point for regional ideas and initiatives.
