Democratic decision making: Majority instead of unanimity decisions

As a democratic union of democratic states the European Union should make its decisions in a democratic way. This means that the decision making in the Commission, in the Parliament and especially in the Council should happen by majority vote. The minority has to be bound by law to abide by the voting results. This is how democracy works!
The abolishment of the unanimity principle should take place in every institution and in every policy field (especially in foreign and taxation affairs). Which questions will require a simple, an absolute or a two thirds majority is a totally different question.

What future for the European Union? — Prospects for democracy in Europe
20 December 2021
18:00 - 20:00
The “Conference on the Future of Europe” has been ongoing for months and concerns about the future of its democracies have been growing in the European Union for months. This takes place in a season in which the EU has shown solidarity to address the pandemic by adopting a common debt to finance the Recovery Fund and an unprecedented responsibility for the EU supply of vaccines. Two positive signs that are not enough to secure our already fragile democracies, which are now further weakened by the COVID crisis. The “Conference on the Future of Europe” is an opportunity to take stock of the situation and give new impetus to the process of European integration, starting with a stronger participation of its citizens in the elaboration of a new project that aims decisively at the construction of a political union. Local civil society associations, which had already expressed their views in a shared platform on the eve of the European elections in May 2019, meet to continue their reflection and proposal. The appointment is scheduled for 20 December, from 18 to 20, with a meeting in presence at the Sala Polivalente CDT in Largo Barale 1, Cuneo. They will introduce Franco Chitolina (APICE) and Gigi Garelli (Horizons of Peace) to the debate. The event is organised by the association APICE as part of the project “Europe at home”, funded by the Province of Cuneo.
