YEPs workshop "A lively local democracy for a healthy European democracy"
On 17, 18 and 23 November the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) organised the Forum "Young Local Leaders for the Future of Europe". The participants of the Young Elected Politicians (YEPs) Programme of the CoR gathered together to work on a set of recommendations to better meet the needs of the local and regional communities and present the views of young local leaders on four main topics: how to build a more resilient and inclusive European society, how to boost the digital transformation, how to foster a lively local democracy for a healthy European democracy, how to ensure a better access of the young people to jobs and education opportunities.
Four workshops were organised on the four themes mentioned above. Here you can find the recommendations that have been adopted on the European democracy topic.
The recommendations will be handed over to the CoR political assembly in the framework of the CoR work on the Conference on the Future of Europe and on the 2022 European Year of Youth.
Event report
Recommendations that have been adopted by the participants of the YEPs Programme: 1. We recommend establishing a budget drawn up by the EU and local and regional authorities for democracy-building exercises targeting schools and other stakeholders, using gamification methods. 2. We recommend that the CoR's 2018 proposal for developing an Erasmus programme for local elected officials be supported and implemented. We also suggest the establishment of a European mentoring programme between young and experienced elected officials, which may include a study visit in Brussels. 3. We recommend that the EU hold and support regular initiatives such as the Conference on the Future of Europe, including at local and regional level, to ensure a permanent dialogue with citizens. 4. We call upon the JRC's Competence Centre on Participatory and Deliberative Democracy to involve local and regional authorities in regular dialogue in order to share their experiences and best practices and to promote at EU level the lessons learned at local level, in a mutual learning effort.Related Ideas
