#TheFutureIsYours Strengthening European democracy
European democracy: How can we buttress press freedom in Europe against looming multiple threats?
A key component of any democracy is press freedom. While, overall, Europe still rates comparatively high οn the press freedom index, there has been a general deterioration in many countries in recent years. According to Reporters Without Borders, the next ten years will be pivotal for press freedom because of converging crises affecting the future of journalism: a geopolitical crisis (aggressiveness of authoritarian regimes); a technological crisis (lack of democratic guarantees); a democratic crisis (polarisation and repressive policies); a crisis of trust (suspicion and even hatred of the media); and an economic crisis (impoverishing quality journalism). These five crisis areas of are now compounded by a global public health crisis.
The panel will look at what the EU can do to ensure that the fourth estate can play its role of holding power to account across the block.
This is one of three discussion panels organised under the overarching title "What kind of Europe do you dream of? Civil society and the Conference on the Future of Europe" chosen for the European Economic and Social Committee's annual communication seminar.
