Launching the Conference on the Future of Europe: European Parliament and national parliaments together for a federal, sovereign and democratic Europe
Event report available
EUF and MFE, together with the Spinelli Group, discussed with Italian parliamentarians the importance of mobilising to promote the Conference on the Future of Europe. Political decision-makers and political parties have the primary duty to urge democratic participation of citizens, civil society and interest groups at all levels of governance; leading the decision-making process and being able to grasp and interpret the feelings, concerns and needs that arise from the bottom up. Current and future challenges increasingly bring the European Union and its citizens together with a common destiny. In a community of destiny, there must be a direct involvement of European citizens in the priorities and new organisational arrangements of the Future Europe. Speakers: Sandro Gozi (President of the EU and MEP); Brando Benifei (President of the Spinelli Group); Tommaso Nannicini (Federalist Intergroup in the Senate); Guy Verhofstadt (Chair Executive Board CoFoE). The meeting is open to everyone and a broad participation of Italian parliamentarians, Italian members of the Spinelli Group, representatives of the political forces is welcome. The event will be live on the Facebook page of the MFE @ MovimentoFederalistaEuropea.
Event report
In view of the inauguration of the Conference on the Future of Europe, the online event was held on 4 May. It addressed the task of building a network between the additional federalist guards within the European Parliament and the national parliaments, which will have to play a crucial role in the work of the conference with a view to reforming the Union in the federal sense. The initiative saw, in addition to the fact that there was a position to be present in addition to the fact that there was a situation in which the initiative was present, in addition to the fact that it had a presence in addition to the presence of a member of the institution. Following the introduction by the President of the MFE, Giorgio Anselmi, at the opening of the meeting, Sandro Gozi, President of the European Union and Member of the European Parliament, stressed the potential of the Conference, which should not only be a survey but a great political opportunity, an instrument of strong pressure that could lead to political and legislative initiatives to reform Europe. This is an unprecedented process of integration between representative democracy and participatory democracy, which, including through the digital platform tool, directly involves citizens by building an alliance between citizens themselves and their representatives, and can make it possible to build Europe differently, exiting the spiral between technocracy and neo-nationalism and overcoming the taboo of the Treaty revision. Citizens, associations, regional councils, mayors have the opportunity to take ownership of the debate on Europe, bringing to the conference the proposals on Europe they want, in order to ensure the bottom-up approach that has been missed in the past. Brando Benifei, President of the Spinelli Group of the European Parliament and Member of the European Parliament, and Tommaso Nannicini, the Federalist Intergroup in the Senate, shared the growing need for a leap in institutional quality in the building of Europe, setting aside the intergovernmental method and the principle of unanimity in order to create a federal and democratic political union, anchoring European citizenship in a hard core of social rights. The Next Generation EU Plan must acquire political substance, a piece of economic sovereignty needs to be moved to the European level in order to launch a genuine European fiscal union. The interventions of the numerous parliamentarians (Berti and Castaldo — Movimento 5 Stelle, Fantetti — Cambiamo, Fusacchia — Federation of the Greens, Gancia — Lega, Garavini — Italia Viva and Valentino — Forza Italia — Forza Italia) touched inter alia on the following: own resources, the possibility of acting in the federal direction only by a group of countries, the capacity to act at international level, common defence and security, and the European electoral system. At the end of the meeting, in which Pier-Virgilio Dastoli also spoke for the European Movement, Luisa Trumellini, Secretary of the MFE, stressed that the challenge was that of a genuine local participation exercise, which could reach the Conference via the platform. It will then be crucial to transfer the work of dialogue and debate with citizens to the platform in order to raise the demand for Europe in society, towards a federal, sovereign and democratic Europe.Related Ideas
