From Signals to Scenarios - Stories about how society and democracy could be
What does the future look like for societies, communities and people across Europe?
How can citizens and their voices be more active, included and represented within governance and decision-making arenas?
Where are our cities and democracies heading?
If these questions and debates interest you, then join this participatory workshop where we will be exploring them more.
Over the past few months, we've been looking into the key messages that traditional forms of media such as newspapers, TV and radio across Europe are sharing about the world we live in. Working with researchers and citizens in different countries, we've identified what these key messages tell us about our societies, democratic structures, civil society and much more.
In this workshop, we want to use these insights and signals to think about the future, and transform them into scenario stories. Together we will:
1. Explore and sense-check media signals and insights from across Europe
2. Discuss what these signals tell us about future opportunities and challenges to our democracies
3. Create scenario stories for how our cities can become spaces for active and inclusive citizen involvement in democracy, governance and decision-making
The workshop will be delivered in English.
The workshop will be held on Zoom and a link will be provided to attendees upon registration. You can find out more information about the event and register for it here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/from-signals-to-scenarios-stories-about-how-society-democracy-could-be-tickets-157921588723

Event report
Foresight - or future thinking - provides scope for people to think about what possibilities the future might hold. In the EUARENAS project, we have been investigating with how contemporary media discourses (i.e., what the media is talking about) can help us identify future signals about our societies and democracies. As part of this work, we have recently run an online workshop for citizens, researchers, people working in the policy arena and civil society actors to look at different pieces of media content from across Europe and use this as stimuli to start to talk about the future. The media content we looked at highlighted how issues such as climate change, migration, human rights, and failings in democracy were all key issues now, and this sparked discussion about the opportunities and challenges for our future worlds. This online workshop identified some key challenges for democracy, opportunities for democracy and key drivers of change in society (see Idea linked to this report). These findings - and others from foresight activities being undertaken in the EUARENAS - will be synthesised into an insight briefing that we will be launching late Autumn 2021.Related Ideas
