Event report available
Europeans and Europeans can get involved in the European Union by electing their representatives in direct elections to the European Parliament every five years. However, the rise in extremism in recent years, the spread of disinformation and the perceived gap between citizens and their elected representatives are encouraging the search for ways to involve citizens more actively in decision-making and policy-making at European level, beyond the electoral phase. How can citizens be more involved in common EU affairs? How to strengthen the link between citizens and the politicians representing them in the European Parliament? What measures would help to promote media freedom and combat disinformation in the Member States? On Thursday 20 January 2022 at 2 p.m., you are invited to take part in a remote discussion on the future of European democracy. The event will include a workshop of ideas to find answers on how to ensure a sustainable future of EU democracy based on the active participation of each of us. Pre-registration is required in order to participate in the event: https://bit.ly/CoFEKlaipėda The event login link and instructions will be sent to the e-mail indicated in the Participant Registration Form. Experts will provide insights on the topical issues in this field and join the workshop: Professor Ramūnas Vilpišauskas, Jean Monnet Chair, Institute of International Relations and Political Science of Vilnius University (VU TSPMI); Ieva Petronytė — Urbonavičienė, researcher at VU TSPMI, Director of Civil Society Institute; VU TSPMI lecturer Vytis Jurkonis, Head of Lithuanian Department at Freedom House. Nine citizens’ debates take place throughout Lithuania, discussing problems and possible solutions in key areas of EU governance. During the events, the most prominent experts in their field will share insights and develop ideas with participants/participants in the future of Europe. This debate is part of the Conference on the European Union. The discussion cycle is organised by the European Commission Representation in Lithuania, Europe Direct Centres, Vilnius University Institute for International Relations and Political Science and Jean Monnet Chair Professor Ramūnas Vilpišauskas. The event is co-financed by the European Union’s Erasmus+ programme.
Event report
The event took place on 20 January 2022 from 2 p.m. to 3.30 p.m. remotely. The event consisted of two parts: interactive discussion of citizens’ participation and EU experts (VU TSPMI Jean Monnet Chair Professor R. Vilpišauskas, researcher at VU TSPMI, Director of the Civil Society Institute Ieva Petronytė — Urbonavičienė and lecturer of VU TSPMI and Vytis Jurkonis, head of the Lithuanian Division of Freedom House) and subsequent workshop. The participants were divided into 5 groups and discussed the fundamental problems of European democracy with the help of experts and moderators and discussed concrete solutions. The main issues discussed included the dissemination of reliable information (need to mark verified information, help people distinguish disinformation); safe channels for participation in EU decision-making; more attractive communication between Members of the European Parliament; opportunities to exploit the potential of young people from an early age by investing in strengthening European identity and developing participatory principles. All participants’ suggestions (around 25) were placed on the Sli.do platform, commented by experts, and during the joint vote the ideas were ranked according to relevance. The event was attended by 64 guests (about 40 participants in the creative workshop), the largest part of which consisted of students and students from the Klaipėda region.Related Ideas
