I agree with Andreas Kueck. Improved communication at the level of citizens is central to citizens' participation in European integration. Present language learning is clearly inadequate, and a radical improvement is needed. The citizens' panels should examine and discuss this innovative proposal, and hopefully support it.
penso che andreas kueck abbia ragione. come si fa a chiedere ai cittadini di esprimere opinioni e pi ad ingorare le opinioni esperesse. non era questa la democrazia come la si intendeva ad atene. le isituzioni europee sicomportano sempre piu' come il comitato centrale del partito cominista bulgaro ai bei tempi.

Stop irregular mass migration
Recognizing that the problem of migration is not a passing issue but is destined to profoundly mark a long tomorrow, a profound change in immigration policies is necessary and must be characterized by: 1) Reform of the methods of entry for work reasons, making them more anchored to the needs of the country and businesses; 2) Strengthening the participation of migrants in active policies, to encourage the generation of meeting circuits of the demand / supply of labor, also through the implementation of skills, and thus reduce the share of families in conditions of absolute poverty; 3) New international agreements with the migrants' countries of origin, aimed at improving cooperation in the economic field and promoting the integration of migrants. Only a renewed Europe can tackle the epochal problem of migration through a strong foreign policy and cooperation with the countries of Africa and the Middle East.
A language is not just a convention, it is a culture of a people and in my opinion at least one European language should be studied very well (French, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch ... are the mirror of as many cultures). The English language, even if our English brothers and sisters are no longer in Europe, in spite of themselves, is – and remains – a fundamental language of exchange, in scientific publications, in international political dialogue throughout the world, as well as in Europe. Let us not forget that.
Je trouve le commentaire de Silvia autour de l'importance de la langue dans ses multiples aspects et usages culturels particulièrement significatif pour la vitalité de la construction européenne. Surtout c'est le lien générationnel qui se fait et se transmet par la langue. Yes, all languages in regular use by a community express the culture of those who use that particular language. This includes Esperanto, which has been in regular use, with its own original literature, theatre, songs etc, for five generations. Esperanto is an artificial language, developed between 1872 and 1887 by the Polish ophthalmologist of Jewish origin Ludwik Lejzer Zamenhof. The purpose of the language is to make the different peoples dialogue trying to create understanding and peace between them with a second simple but expressive language, belonging to humanity and not to a people (Wikipedia).
So, Esperanto is a conventional language, it doesn't represent people or a particular culture. I'm sorry but I disagree with Sean. Have a look to Article 3 (3.4) of the Treaty on European Union: "(The Union) It shall respect its rich cultural and linguistic diversity, and shall ensure that Europe's cultural heritage is safeguarded and enhanced."
As a fluent speaker of Esperanto, and of seven other languages (Irish, English, French, German, Polish, Spanish and Welsh) I am, perhaps in a reasonably good position to discuss it. Having used Esperanto for over 30 years, I find nothing 'artificial' in it. Only those who do not know it call it 'artificial'. It has become a living language, just as a test-tube baby become a child like any other child. Dr Detlev Blanke of the Humboldt University, Berlin, wrote his Ph.D thesis on the over 900 attempts to devise an international language. He outlines the 28 stages through which Esperanto has passed on its way from a language project to become a fully developed, living language. Not one of the other 900 language projects have completed this process.
My Irish friends taught me the pride and traditions of their culture and the Gaelic language, so difficult but so fascinating.. And remaining within the Celtic languages, Welsh is no less interesting and I would like to deepen it (too bad that the Welsh teacher, despite attempts at resuscitation, is still in a vigilant coma ..!).

The historical events you mention also deeply affected the Esperanto community: about one third of fluent Esperanto speakers were murdered in the Holocaust, as many of them were Jewish. An astronomical amount of money has been spent worldwide on the teaching of English, especially since 1945. If just 10% of this spending were diverted towards their Esperanto, there would be two consequences: 1. In one generation all human being would be able to speak fluently and comfortably to each other (this can never be reached by teaching English alone, otherwise it would already have been reached). 2. The worldwide level of English would actually improve, due to the propedeutical qualities of Esperanto.
Hello, I speak, (among others), the Catalan, considered a minority language despite its 10 millions speakers. In the EU today, each nation-state applies its own linguistic policy and, if it is a centralizing State, like France or Spain, the "minority" languages disappears irretrievably.
From a certain number of speakers, a language should not be considered as a minority: a scientific criterion (number of speakers) should be applied, in particular to save Catalan which is attacked in this moment by extreme right.
In my opinion, is also fundamental to protect and defend all existing languages, because Europe is a mosaic of regions, cultures and, of course, languages.
We can develop applications to traduce minority languages as well as official idiomas.
It was very interesting to think along with conference of the future of Europe. I hope to be able to participate again in the future.

Ora sono pubblicate nella sola lingua inglese che non è più lingua ufficiale con la ratifica del trattato di uscita del Regno Unito. La commissione europea è inadempiente nella correzione del regolamento 1 sul funzionamento e di fatto non avendolo corretto giustifica la ufficialità di questa lingua.
Non vedo essere recepito quanto indicato in più idee maggiormente votate dell'insegnamento nelle scuole della lingua internazionale ausiliaria esperanto in modo da facilitare l'apprendimento di più lingue. Spero che i membri del parlamento europeo consultino le idee pubblicate e non si limitino a leggere il resoconto del Panel dei cittadini.

Afin qu'aucune des langues minoritaires ne disparaissent, il est extrêmement important d'apprendre une langue neutre et que tous les européens pourront parler sans difficulté après un temps d'apprentissage relativement court. L'espéranto est la solution. Cela permettra de consacrer davantage de temps à la langue "de coeur", choisie par amour. Et cela empêchera, en tout cas freinera efficacement, l'impérialisme des langues dominantes.

English has some disadvantages in comparison to Esperanto:
- To learn English takes four times as much hours than Esperanto.
- To use mainly English in the EU means a considerable disadvantage for southern and eastern member states, because their languages have a bigger distance from English than e.g. Dutch or Swedish. As a consequence the percentage of people being able to speak English is highly different: In the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden about 85-90% of the population are able to communicate in English.
In contrast there are nine member states in the south and east where only about 20-35% are able to communicate in English (Portugal, Spain, Italy, Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Rumania, Bulgaria).
So I plead for a (slow) transition to Esperanto. Are you familiar with Esperanto?
